Upcoming Department of Music concerts

Upcoming concerts for Bemidji State University?s Department of Music include BSU?s Wind Ensemble performing with the Northern Minnesota Honor Band; the Minnesota Music Teachers Association festival; and BSU?s Fall Festival choir concert.

Wind Ensemble / Northern Minnesota Honor Band
The Bemidji State University Wind Ensemble, together with the Northern Minnesota Honor Band, will perform in concert from 7 p.m. until 8:30p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Main Theatre of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

Participating in the Northern Minnesota Honor band will be over 60 top high school musicians representing over 12 different high schools, nominated as excellent music students by their high school band directors.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Minnesota Music Teachers Association Ensemble Festival
The Minnesota Music Teachers Association Ensemble Festival will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3. There will be two recitals. The first recital will be at 10:45 a.m., and the second will be at 1:00 p.m. Both recitals will take place in in the Thompson Recital Hall, located in the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

Students of MMTA members, Frances Van Dorn and Margaret Maxwell, and family and friends will present a variety of musical duo selections from classical to pop on piano and other instruments.

This event is free and open to the public.

Fall Festival Choir Concert
Bemidji State University presents its annual Fall Festival Choir Concert, showcasing four choral ensembles, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 in the Main Theatre of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

Performing will be the Varsity Singers, Musikanten, Chamber Singers and Bemidji Choir.

Concert repertoire is varied from sacred music of the renaissance to contemporary selections.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and free to all students with valid student IDs.

Varsity Singers holiday concert set for Dec. 10

Bemidji State University?s Varsity Singers will perform a holiday themed concert on Dec. 10

The concert begins at 7 p.m. on the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex main stage.

The concert will feature performances by the entire Varsity Singers group, and also by two breakout ensembles and a soloist; the soloist will perform ?O Holy Night? and lead several audience sing-alongs of traditional Christmas carols.

Selections to be performed include ?Rise Up Shepherd and Follow,? ?God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,? ?Hodie Alleluia? and ?Mary Rocked the Little Baby.? Two selections by contemporary Minnesota composers will also be performed ? ?What Child? by Paul Lohman and ?Road Home? by Stephen Paulus.

This event is free and open to the public; however, in lieu of an admission fee people attending the concert are asked to donate non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Bemidji Food Shelf.

The Varsity Singers are a group of 30 unauditioned students from Bemidji State University under the direction of Steve Reznicek, an adjunct music instructor at the university.

Weekend music concert schedule announced

Bemidji State University?s Department of Music will host a concert of its Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band and a recital by senior Erik Bergsven on Oct. 27-28.

On Oct. 27, Bergsven, a senior from Bemidji, will perform a vocal recital as part of the requirements for his bachelor?s degree in music. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of Bemidji State?s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex; it is open to the public free of charge.

Bergsven, a tenor, will perform fourteen pieces in French, German, Italian and English. These pieces are from a variety of composers, including Gabriel Faur?, Robert Schumman, Stefano Donaudy, Guiseppi Verdi, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Stephen Sondheim. The chosen music pieces center mostly around the themes of nature, love, journey, and self-discovery and according to Bergsven reflect his own college journey of self-discovery.

Wind Ensemble / Jazz Band
Bemidji State?s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band will hold a post-tour home concert on Sunday, Oct. 28. The two-hour concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the main theatre of Bemidji State?s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens; students are admitted free.

The bands at Bemidji State University have a long-standing tradition and are recognized throughout Minnesota as some of the finest programs in the region. The Wind Ensemble is Bemidji State?s select wind band. Its repertoire includes many of the exciting contemporary wind band pieces as well as 20th Century concert band classics.

The Wind Ensemble is open to all BSU students and rehearses three days per week. The ensemble takes an annual band tour with its concerts performed at many of the major high school music programs in the area. Recent tours include performances in Winnipeg and Minneapolis.

Now in its 32nd year of existence, Bemidji State University?s Jazz Band is an auditioned group of student musicians. The group practices twice weekly and throughout the years has been accompanied by some of the greatest names in Jazz ? including Rich Matteson, Bobby Shew, Steve Turre and Frank Mantooth. Each year, the Jazz Band tours regionally and has traveled as far as Mexico and Hawaii.

The BSU Jazz Band is directed by Dr. Del Lyren, and participating students may earn up to two credits per semester of participation.

Wind Ensemble concert set for Dec. 9

The Bemidji State University Wind Ensemble will be performing a variety of band and chamber music for their concert on Sunday, Dec. 9.

The two-hour concert begins at 3 p.m. on the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex main stage. Tickets are available at the door, and are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for all students with valid ID.

The program will include a circus march by Karl King entitled ?Barnum and Bailey?s Favorite,? a piece from the Baroque era by J.S. Bach entitled ?Little Prelude and Fugue,? and two pieces from modern band literature entitled ?At Morning?s First Light? by David Gillingham and ?December Dance? by Andrew Boysen, Jr.

Chamber music selections will highlight the work of smaller groups of students. The percussion ensemble will also perform a piece by composer Michael Colgrass, an ensemble of brass and percussion will play a transcription of ?Procession of the Nobles? by Rimsky-Korsakov and a mixed ensemble will perform several movements of German composer Kurt Weill?s ?Little Threepenny Music,? a piece based on music from ?The Threepenny Opera.?
