Tyler Hardy led the Bucs with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Photo by Jason Roberts.

MIAMI – The Barry Buccaneers hung tough with the FIU Panthers for 22 minutes, before the Panthers pulled away late for a 68-38 exhibition win in women's basketball action at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Panthers led 30-25 at the half after the Bucs shot a very respectable 9-of-20 from the field in the first half. Barry knotted the game at 30-30 with just 2:07 gone in the second period by going 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

But the Bucs hit just 4-of-18 from the field the rest of the way and made just one more trip to the line as the Panther defense clamped down.

FIU's Jerica Coley led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 10 boards on the night, also chipping in with game-high marks of six assists and four blocks, and adding two steals. Finda Mansare chipped in with 12 points. Tyler Hardy led the Bucs with eight points and five rebounds.

Barry opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at the West Florida Tip-off Classic in Pensacola, Fla., against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes.

PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rained three-pointers on the West Florida Argonauts’ parade, rallying from an 11-point halftime deficit for a 58-55 win in the final game of the McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at the UWF Field House.

The Bucs (2-0) were tied 8-8 after a jumper by Emily Schahczinski with 10:43 left in the first period, but went cold from the field as the Argonauts (0-2) went on an 14-3 run to close the half and took an 11-point lead into the locker room.

But in the second half, the Bucs came out firing, hitting 6-of-7 from three-point range in the first 3:30 minutes to take a 29-25 lead. After another three-pointer by Jackie Perez at the 13:57 mark, the Bucs led 32-27, their biggest of the game.

The game turned into a nip-and-tuck affair down the stretch, with eight ties and seven lead changes. With the game knotted at 53-53 with 1:51 remaining after Emily Erland hit one of two from the line, the Bucs regained the lead on their next possession as Danika Pisconeri hit a pair of free throws.

Down by three, 56-53, after a free throw from Barry’s Amanda Frontino, the Argos had the ball and a chance to tie, but Jackie Perez came up with a big steal and Colette Eule dribbled out0:13 seconds on the clock before being fouled with 5.1 seconds left. She calmly stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throws to ice the game. The Argos got a layup at the buzzer to make the final margin.

Eule led all scorers with 25 points, 22 in the second half. Perez chipped in 14, while Frontino added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Baylie Bridges led the Argos with 12 points off the bench. Jaymie Druding was the only starter for UWF in double figures with 10 points.

The Bucs return home to host the Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Jerezanas on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 pm.

Collins Advances To Top-9 In Woman of the Year Competition

Grace Collins advanced to the top-9 in the NCAA Woman of the Year contest.

INDIANAPOLIS—Barry’s Grace Collins advanced to the top-three in Division II for NCAA Woman of the Year on Thursday.

The softball star joins runner Kate Griewisch of Lenoir-Rhyne and tennis player Verena Preikschas of California State Stanislaus as the honorees from Division II.

During her time at Barry, Collins made an impact on her school and the community around her. Collins served as vice president for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and traveled to Nashville to assist with relief of the 2010 flood. She was a committee chair for Make-A-Wish Walk for Wishes, America’s Moms For Soldiers and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A four-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete, she was named to the academic all-district team in 2011. She was the first student-athlete to win the Barry University President’s Award, which is presented to the most outstanding senior. In 2012, Collins received the university’s Excellence in Leadership Award.

Collins was named NFCA first-team All-South Region and was a first-team All-American in 2011. She also earned first-team all-region and third-team All-America honors through Daktronics as both a junior and a senior. She also received Sunshine State Conference first-team accolades in 2011 and 2012.

“Collegiate athletics has taught me the importance of determination, hard work and undying passion,” Collins said in her personal statement. “In life, everyone feels adrenaline and stress, makes mistakes and some successful strides. But it is those who learn to excel through adversity, manage stress, turn mistakes into learned lessons and handle achievements with humility who will ultimately succeed in the future. Collegiate athletics has empowered me with this competitive edge to not only handle any situation but to conquer it successfully.”

The three Division II finalists are joined by the Division I group (Hillary Bach, Arizona State, softball; Brooke Pancake, Alabama, golf and Alexi Pappas, Dartmouth, cross country/track) and the Division III group (Kelsey Kittleson, Luther, softball; Sarah Jane Otey, Coast Guard, rowing/swimming and Elizabeth Phillips, Washington-St. Louis, cross country/track) to form the top-9 finalists.

The nine finalists, along with the other honorees who made the Top 30, will be invited to Indianapolis for the Woman of the Year festivities. The award weekend (Oct. 12-14) will include a community service project that gives honorees the opportunity to interact with young girls in the city of Indianapolis and serve as role models for them. The NCAA will also host a reception in their honor.

The NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award, now in its 22nd year, honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. Every NCAA member institution is encouraged to honor its top graduating female student-athlete by submitting her name for consideration. Each conference assesses the eligibility of its members’ nominees and selects at least one student-athlete to represent the conference.

To be eligible for the award, a female student-athlete must have completed eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2012 spring season, graduated no later than the end of the summer 2012 term and achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics selects the national winner from the nine finalists.

Suttington to Play Pro Basketball in Germany

Shanna Suttington was offered a one-year contract to play professionally in Germany. Photo by Mickie Lewis

MANASSAS, Va. -- Former Barry University women's basketball player Shanna Suttington was offered a one-year contract to play professionally with ASC Mainz, a Second Division German team.

She reports to the team Aug. 8.

A 5-4 guard from Manassas, Va., Suttington attended a tryout camp in Germany at the beginning of June, and impressed the Mainz coaching staff enough to give her a shot. She will become the first American player to compete for Mainz in four years.

"Shanna is a small, quick player who will help us enormously to develop the (guard) position," ASC coach Alexander Schoch told the Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper in Germany. "Because Katharina Schnitzler is currently studying abroad, there was an urgent need for action in the building. Shanna was our preferred candidate."

Schoch was impressed with Suttington's defense, playmaking and passing ability and prowess in spotting open teammates.

"I saw three complete games of her on DVD. She has convinced me completely," Schoch said.

Suttington averaged 9.4 points per game, led the team with 101 assists and 49 steals, and made a team-best 35 three-point field goals in 2011-12. She finished her career ranked second on Barry's three-point field goals made list with 149. She ranks third in assists (337), sixth in steals (163) and seventh in points (952). Suttington ranks in the top 10 of 14 categories, having attempted the most three-pointers (511) in school history.

ASC Mainz is the club former Bucs men's player Willie Whitfield plays for professionally. ASC Mainz plans to continue its relationship with Barry in search of potential players for the future.

"I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to play professionally overseas," Suttington said. "I truly thank God for His blessings. It means more to me than words can explain to have my dreams turn into a reality."

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's basketball teams host Rollins College Wednesday in games to determine critical positioning for next week's Sunshine State Conference tournament.

Former NBA star Kenny Anderson will host halftime festivities and participate in Barry Internet broadcasts. Fans can catch the games by visiting the schedule page video and audio links for both men's and women's teams.

Barry's women's team hosts No. 9 Rollins at 5:30 p.m. in Health & Sports Center. Barry closes the regular season at home Saturday at 2 p.m. on Senior Day against Saint Leo.

The event will be hosted at a neutral facility for the first time since 2001. The SSC Basketball Championship was hosted at The Lakeland Center from 1995-2001 and had been conducted at campus sites since that time.

"We are thrilled to partner with the Central Florida Sports Commission and Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau to bring our basketball tournament to a neutral site and have all nine men's and all nine women's teams participate," SSC Commissioner Jay Jones said. "The event will be a fun weekend for basketball fans and, hopefully, will become an annual tradition for fans around the state. It will provide a great tip-off to the excitement of college basketball in March."

"The Central Florida Sports Commission has partnered with the Sunshine State Conference, not only on previous conference championships, but also at the national level with the NCAA," John Bisignano, President and CEO for the Central Florida Sports Commission, said. The arena is part of the 120-acre Osceola Heritage Park Complex, which also contains a 60,000-square foot exhibition center and Osceola County Stadium - spring training home of the Houston Astros - as part of the complex. Osceola Heritage Park has served as host to numerous events since it opened in 2003, including concerts, trade shows, rodeos, family shows, and numerous sporting events.

"We are very excited to host these prestigious collegiate basketball championships," said Don Miers, Sports Development Director for the Kissimmee CVB, which serves as Osceola County's tourism marketing department. "We sincerely hope the players and coaches enjoy success and fall in love with our Osceola County Heritage Park so that it becomes home to their tournament for years to come!"

Women's Basketball Runs Streak To Five Straight Over Sailfish

Jen Mitchell chipped in 11 points, including a free throw with 13 seconds that iced the contest. Photo by Jason Roberts.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five straight with a 63-59 win over Palm Beach Atlantic Wednesday.

Alexandria Zamora scored 17 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked three shots as Barry (6-3) beat PBA (5-9) for the second time in three weeks. Only this time, it was a tighter outcome, despite the Sailfish playing shorthanded.

Barry led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but PBA rallied to cut it to 53-52 on a three-pointer by Ashley Dolberry at the 6:04 mark. Dolberry finished with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds before fouling out with 5:39 left.

The Buccaneers pushed the lead back to five on Zamora’s jumper in the paint, but Jordan Kong’s triple with 1:57 to go pulled the Sailfish within a pair, 58-56. Zamora hit a jumper in the lane off an inbounds play with two seconds remaining on the shot clock to give Barry a six-point lead with 28 seconds left. Loren Wilkins answered for PBA on the next trip down the floor to cut it to three with 18 seconds on the clock.

But after Jen Mitchell sank one of two free throws for the Bucs, Zamora blocked a shot by a driving Corissa Archer to preserve the win for Barry.

Barry, which came back from a six-point Palm Beach Atlantic lead in the first half to build an eight-point edge, shot 22 of 52 from the field. The Bucs shot 53.8 percent in the first half. PBA was equally effective from the field, knocking down 51.7 percent of its shots.

Wilkins led Palm Beach Atlantic in scoring with 14 as four Sailfish reached double figures. Yvonne Houston had 12 points and six boards, and Mitchell finished with 11 points for the Buccaneers.

Barry, which hosts Wisconsin Lutheran, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, out-rebounded Palm Beach Atlantic, 39-27. The Sailfish canned eight of 20 three-pointers, but, in addition to being limited to just seven players, were tagged with 18 fouls. The Bucs were whistled for just eight fouls, and sank 15 of 23 from the free throw line. PBA attempted just eight free throws, sinking three.

In the first meeting, Barry beat PBA by 15, 65-50, in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Dec. 7.

Barry’s Shanna Suttington had seven points, five assists and five steals, and played a key role in the Bucs’ penetration game. Jackie Perez scored eight points in nine minutes.

Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker At Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla.—A strong defensive effort by the Buccaneers was not enough on a night in which Barry (9-5, 4-1 SSC) struggled offensively. The Florida Southern Mocs defeated the Bucs 63-60 in overtime Saturday afternoon in a battle of two of the top three teams in the conference. The Buccaneer’s entered the day unblemished in conference play and the Mocs held down the third spot with a 3-2 mark, but conference wins on the road are tough to come by and Barry was unable to steal one in Jenkins Field House on this night.

The first half was a struggle offensively for both teams as the Mocs jumped out to an early 9-3 lead capped by a Michaela Hawley bucket at the 16:12. Alex Zamora was limited to just three minutes in the half as she picked up two quick fouls and was quickly replaced by Brooke Keeton.

The Bucs would answer with a 10-2 run after a Glaucia Lehn layup at the 9:38 mark to give them the two point lead, however, the Mocs (12-4, 4-2 SSC) would regain the advantage and would go on to lead by as many as seven.

Both teams shot under forty percent from the field in the first half ,with the Bucs shooting thirty-five percent including 0-5 from beyond the arch, but it was Florida Southern’s dominance on the boards and a pair of three point baskets that resulted in a five point advantage heading in to the intermission.

A re-energized Buccaneer squad in the second half slowly climbed back in to the game by forcing turnovers as a result of a full court press and an offensive spark from Keeton off the bench. An 11-0 run capped off by a Keeton three point conversion pulled Barry within one with just under eleven minutes to play.

Both teams  would trade buckets throughout the remainder of the half and the Bucs found themselves tied at 52 with ten seconds left, but a three point look from Suttington rimmed out to force an overtime.

In the extra period the Mocs led by as many as five, and even so, the Bucs would have an opportunity down three with just over one second on the clock but Jackie Perez was unable to get a shot off.

The Buccaneers finished shooting 34 percent from the floor and 0-13 from downtown, it was their stringent defense that forced 20 Moccasin’s turnovers resulting in 20 points on the other end of the floor that kept Barry in the game.

Three players finished in double figures for the Bucs as Danielle DeBerry finished with 13 points, Shanna Suttington chipped in 10 points and Keeton contributed with 11 points and three blocks off the bench.

The Mocs were led by Michaela Hawley, the conference’s leading scorer, with a game high 30 points despite playing the majority of the second half and overtime in foul trouble. Morgan Lamberg added 12, and Taylor Maldonado chipped in eight for Florida Southern.

The loss was the first in SSC play for the Buccaneers, snapping their three game winning streak.

Barry now turns to Rollins, the pre-season favorites to finish a-top the SSC in a matchup of the first and second place teams in the league. The Buccaneers will travel to Winter Park Wednesday night with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. Live-stat and video broadcast is available through the Barry University website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.

DeBerry Named Second-Team All-SSC

Danielle DeBerry was named Second Team all-conference.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry senior guard Danielle DeBerry was named Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference as announced by the league office.

DeBerry, a 5-foot-5 transfer from North Carolina Central, averaged 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as the Buccaneers went 18-9 overall, 12-4 in the SSC to share the conference title for the first time since 1991.

"She's very deserving," Buccaneers assistant coach Cassie Bro said. "She played hard every single game, both offensively and defensively."

DeBerry, who hails from Durham, N.C., shot 46.8 percent from the floor, and hit 83.3 percent of her free throws. She was second on the team in rebounds. She was first on the team in steals with 49.

"I feel like we got a whole lot out of this year," DeBerry said. "I want to go to the NCAA Tournament, but if not, I'll still be happy."

DeBerry scored a career-high 24 points in Barry's SSC quarterfinal game with Florida Tech on Wednesday. She scored in double figures in 15 games.

“Danielle has been one of our most consistent players for the past two years," Bucs head coach Bill Sullivan said. "As one of our team captains Danielle ranks in the top 10 in several statistical categories in our conference. Danielle leads by example as she works extremely hard and never takes a possession off in practice or in games.

“From a coach’s standpoint, you always want your best players to be your hardest workers, and Danielle is exactly that. She was our leader both on and off the court, and we are extremely proud of Danielle’s well-deserved accomplishments this year.”

Senior forward Alex Zamora, a transfer from Fordham, was named to the All-Newcomer Team. Zamora, a native of Apopka, Fla., averaged 8.3 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game.

Zamora scored in double figures in 11 games. She had a career-high 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in her Barry debut in the season opener this year against Columbus State. She had five double-doubles, and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds against Wisconsin Lutheran on Dec. 29.

“Alexandria gave us a strong post presence on both ends of the court as she proved to be one of the best rebounders and shot-blockers in the conference," Sullivan said. "Alex was a player who made an immediate-impact for us this year, and she was a major factor in helping us win a share of the SSC regular season championship.”

Barry awaits its NCAA Tournament hopes and final seeding in the South Region poll this weekend. Barry entered the weekend ranked seventh in the South. The top eight teams in each region advance to the NCAA Tournament hosted by one of the top two teams in each region.

Buc-ed Into a Tie for First

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Back on top.

Barry University women’s basketball team won its league-leading sixth straight game Wednesday, beating Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn University on the road, 64-59. The win moved the Buccaneers (15-6, 9-2 SSC) into a tie with Rollins College for first place in the league.

But it didn’t come easy, despite a double-digit lead the Bucs built in the opening half.

Lynn connected on five of its first 10 shots to tie the game roughly four-and-a-half minutes into the second half. Danielle DeBerry scored on consecutive possessions to kick Barry’s lead back to three before the Fighting Knights went on a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead of their own.

Jackie Perez buried a three from the corner, and sank a free throw for her second four-point play of the season to push the Buccaneers back on top, 43-42. Perez knocked down her fourth triple of the game with 8:32 left in the game to extend the Bucs’ lead back to six.

Kira Harvey canned a triple to pull the Knights within three, and Marquis Lee sank two free throws with just under three minutes left to tie the game at 55-55. Suttington quickly answered with a layup on the other end to push the Bucs back up by a bucket.

The lead changed hands 11 times, but none after Suttington’s layup. She and DeBerry each sank a pair of free throws inside the final 1:44 to keep Barry ahead by five.

Suttington, celebrating her 22nd birthday, finished with 10 points, eight assists and three steals. DeBerry had 17 points and six rebounds. Perez scored 15 points, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Harvey finished with 24 points, and Lee scored 15.

Barry hit four triples in the first half, including back-to-back threes by  Perez in transition.

The Buccaneers outrebounded the Knights, 21-11, in the first half. Kaley Howard, inserted into the starting lineup after Yvonne Houston was shelved for the night for precautionary reasons, had seven boards in the opening half.

Barry built a 15-point first half lead when DeBerry scored on a layup with 3:39 left on the clock. Lynn went on an 8-0 run, cashing in on Lee’s layup with 40 seconds before the half, to cut the Bucs’ lead to seven.

Women's Basketball Tabbed 8th In SSC Poll

The won a share of the conference title in 2011-12, but are picked 8th in the 2012-13 poll. Photo by Joel Auerbach.

WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers are coming off a share of the league title, but got no respect in the Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball pre-season poll, released on Wednesday by the conference office.

Last year, the Bucs went 18-9, including a 12-4 mark in the SSC, to tie for first with Rollins and Florida Southern. But the Bucs lost all five starters and several key reserves for that squad and the voters took that into account.

Only three players who played in at least 20 games return for this season. Junior Colette Eule played in all 27 games a year ago and is the top returning scorer on the squad. An outstanding shooter, she connected on 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent at the line. Sophomore Jackie Perez was second on the team last year in made three-pointers with 26 and her 37.1 shooting percentage was seventh in the league. Sophomore Kaley Howard averaged 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a rookie last year and was the only player, other than the five normal starters, to log at least two starts. She shot a very respectable 40.9 percent from the field.

Rollins, the SSC regular-season co-champion and tournament champion in 2011-12, picked up a total of 188 points and 13 first-place votes in the poll conducted among conference coaches and sports information directors (whose votes counted half as much as the coaches).

Nova Southeastern was tabbed second in the preseason poll and collected the remaining five first-place votes. Tampa took the third spot with 131 points. Florida Tech occupied the fourth slot with 117 points, while the other co-champs, Florida Southern, were tabbed fifth with 88 points.

The next three positions in the poll were separated by just nine points. Eckerd was projected to finish sixth with 83 points. Lynn was slated seventh with 78, followed closely by Barry in the eighth slot with 74. Saint Leo rounded out the poll, in the ninth spot.

The women open the season at the West Florida Tip-off Tournament, Nov. 9-10. They face the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes on the 9th and the host Argonauts on the 10th.

Rank – Team, Points (1st Place Votes)

Women's Basketball Clamps Down To Beat Sharks

Alexandria Zamora had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bucs over the Sharks. Photo by Envision Sports Media.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers put the defensive clamps on the Nova Southeastern Sharks, running off a 19-1 run over the last 8:38, to engineer a 47-42 win in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Bucs (12-6, 7-2 SSC) led 28-25 with 14:08 left in the second half after a jumper in the lane by Alexandria Zamora. But Nova (11-7, 4-5 SSC) countered with a 16-0 run over the 6:30, capped by Meixandra Porter’s fast-break bucket that gave the Sharks a 41-28 lead at the 8:38 mark.

From there, it would be all Barry. The Bucs held the Sharks without a basket the rest of the way as Nova went 0-for10 from the field and turned the ball over three times.

Trailing 41-40, Barry’s Jen Mitchell went to the line with 1:04 remaining. She hit the first to tie the game, but missed the second. Yvonne Houston snagged the offensive rebound and drained a basket in the lane to put the Bucs up 43-41. Danielle DeBerry hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 0:21 seconds to preserve the win.

Zamora led the Bucs with 14 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. DeBerry chipped in with 12 points. Jasmine Wilkins led the Sharks with 11 points and Porter added 10.

The Bucs step out of conference on Wednesday, Feb. 1 as they host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at 5:30 pm. You can follow all the game action on GoBarryBucs.com through the GameCentral portal powered by Stretch Internet.

Women's Basketball Swats Panthers To Stay Unbeaten

Danielle DeBerry led the Bucs with 15 points. Photo by Jason Roberts.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers used a stifling defense that swatted a school-record 18 shots to beat the Florida Tech Panthers 56-43 in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night. The win kept the Bucs (9-4, 4-0 SSC) undefeated in the conference and tied for first place with Rollins.

The Bucs jumped out to a 10-point lead on the first quarter of the game, leading 13-3 after a jumper by Brooke Keeton at the 10:42 mark of the first half. But the Panthers (10-5, 1-4 SSC) stormed back with a 12-2 run over the next 5:31 to cut the lead to three, 15-12 on a layup by Jasmine Brown. The Bucs carried a two-point lead, 17-15 into the locker room.

Florida Tech stayed close early in the second half, trailing 22-19 after a bucket by Briauna Hagins at the 16:14 mark. But Barry rolled off seven straight points on two jumpers by Alexandria Zamora and a three-pointer from Shanna Suttington that made it 29-19 at the 14:00 minute mark.

The Panthers never got closer than four points and the Bucs extended the lead to as many as 15 before settling for the 13-point win.

Danielle DeBerry led the Bucs with 15 points, while Zamora added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Kingfield led the Panthers with nine points.

Keeton swatted seven of the Bucs 18 blocks, while Zamora and Yvonne Houston each had three. The 18 blocks broke the mark of 14 set Jan. 20, 2001 against Tampa.

The Bucs next face the Florida Southern Mocs on Saturday, Jan. 14 in Lakeland, Fla., in their first road game since Dec. 17. Barry went 4-1 on their five-game homestand.

Re-built Women's Basketball Team Has Eyes On The Post-Season

Bill Sullivan looks to lead the Buccaneers back to the NCAA tournament in 2013. Photo by Jason Roberts. To say that the 2012-13 edition of the Barry University women’s basketball team is “re-built” might be an understatement. All five starters from last season’s squad which tied for first in the Sunshine State Conference are gone, along with several key reserves. In fact, only three players who played in at least 20 games return.

“This should be a very interesting year for our women’s basketball team,” head coach Bill Sullivan said. “For the first time ever, we have more newcomers than returners on the roster. Only four of our players return and we have added nine new ones. With all five starters graduated from our 2011-12 SSC Co-Champion team, we certainly need to rely on several of our newcomers to play significant roles this year.”

The Bucs return only 23.1 percent of their scoring and 20.0 percent of their rebounding from last year. The returning players did shoot 37.2 percent from the floor, including 31.9 from three-point range, and 64.2 percent from the line.

“We are excited about our four returners and we believe we have brought in several immediate impact players,” Sullivan said. “With a talented blend of players both new and old, one of our team strengths should be our depth and size at the guard positions. Even though we may not be the most experienced squad, our goal is to work hard to become a very competitive team by the time we begin conference play.”

As much as anywhere, the Bucs’ strength lies on the perimeter. In addition to three returning players, the Bucs have three transfers and three freshmen vying for time in the backcourt.

“We feel we have a lot of depth at the guard positions,” Sullivan said. “Since we have several excellent three-point shooters, expect to see a large number of our shots coming from long range. Our perimeter players will certainly be given the ‘green light’ from beyond the arc this year.”

Senior Amanda Frontino has played in 42 games as a Buccaneer, by far the most on the roster. A very intelligent player, now in her third year in the system, her experience will be invaluable to integrating the newcomers.

The Bucs’ three transfers all led their teams in scoring after having played at all levels of NCAA basketball.

Senior Dominique Dixon averaged 12.1 points per game for Detroit-Mercy, ranking 17th in the NCAA Division I Horizon League. She chipped in 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists, while shooting 31.0 percent from three-point range.

Junior Tyler Hardy topped the Warriors at Wayne State (Mich.) at 14.6 points per game in the Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference. She shot 47.5 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the line. She added 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

Both Dixon and Hardy bring great size to the backcourt.

The three freshmen all bring very different skills sets.

Stephanie Ball was a scoring machine at Lincoln Park Academy where she pumped in over 1,400 points and led the Greyhounds to four straight district titles. As a senior, she averaged 18 points, 3.8 assists and 4 steals per game to earn First-Team All-State selection by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.

Champ Horice was an athletic prodigy at Apopka High. The 5-8 guard set school records in rebounding (18) and blocked shots (9). As a senior, she averaged 9.1 points and 9.0 rebounds, three assists and three steals per game to earn a spot in the UNCF All-Star Game.

Ella Ramonas is a big guard with a great basketball IQ. She led Deering High in Maine to a 74-10 mark over her four years, including one state title. She led the Rams in scoring (18 ppg), rebounding (8 rpg), assists (4 apg) and steals (4spg) to earn All-Southern Maine Activities Association honors and a spot in the McDonald’s Maine All-Star Game.

With only sophomore Kaley Howard returning in the post, newcomers figure to play a very prominent role this season.

Howard averaged 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a rookie last year and was the only player, other than the five normal starters, to log at least two starts. She shot a very respectable 40.9 percent from the field.

“Although we will be fairly young and inexperienced at the forward and center positions, we believe we have added some talented posts who will prove to be high-quality players,” Sullivan said. “We realize there will be a learning curve but they are a hard-working group and once they get some game experience we expect them to be solid contributors to our team.”

A Division I transfer and a pair of freshmen round out the contingent in the post.

Junior Alesha Jenkins spent two seasons with the Eagles of North Carolina Central. As a sophomore, she averaged 4.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 63.3 percent from the line. She was a Broward County All-Star selection and a Miami Herald Second-Team honoree at Coconut Creek High.

Emily Schahczinski and Danika Pisconeri are the tallest members of the squad at 6-1.

Schahczinski averaged 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and was selected MVP for the Elkhorn High Elks in Wisconsin as a senior. She was selected to the Division II All-Star Team by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and helped lead her club team, the Wisconsin Lakers AAU, to the United States Junior National championship in 2012.

Pisconeri hails from Western Australia, like teammate Frontino, and won a bronze medal in the Under-20 Australian National Championships with her club team, the Waves. A solid defender, she was ranked in the top-10 in the national tournament in rebounds and blocked shots.

In addition, some of the perimeter players have the size and ability to help out in the post, including Frontino, Ramonas and Hardy.

Barry Athletics Excels in Classroom

Women's golf posted the highest GPA of Barry's athletic teams during the spring.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — A trend of academic excellence that began more than a decade ago continues for Barry Athletics as the Buccaneers combined to post a 3.237 grade point average in the Spring '12 semester. The term was the 18th straight in which the department has been above 3.0, and with a 3.268 GPA, it was the 21st straight with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

The Bucs set a number of records in the spring. There were 17 undergraduates and one graduate student with a 4.0 GPA, which was a record for both the total and the percentage (9.6 percent) to have a spotless term GPA in the spring. The record-setting group was led by a trio of seniors who each earned their fifth President’s List awards: Anne Fourdraine (women’s golf), Daniel Stapff (men’s golf) and Allie Llaneras (women’s soccer). Sofia Jakobsson (women’s soccer) and Alex Decker (baseball) picked up their third awards, while Ziena Cline (women’s soccer), Joe Conkleton (men’s soccer), Johnny Rodrigues (men’s soccer) and Haley Struthers (women’s soccer) earned their second. The rest of the group, Renee Forcier (rowing), Harold Holness (baseball), Melissa Madrid (women’s soccer), Daniela Murray (women’s golf), Julio Ramos (baseball), Connor Randel (men’s soccer), Julie Stas (women’s tennis) and Kris Wilkinson (men’s soccer), earned their first. Men’s soccer’s Lucas Noboa earned a 4.0 in his first term in graduate school.

“We all are very proud of our student-athletes and their accomplishments this past year both academically & athletically,” Director of Athletics Mike Covone said. “Based on our Academic Success Rates, student achievements, service and collaboration, and team accomplishments on the field, on the water and on the courts, we are fulfilling Barry’s mission while making a difference in the community.”

For the term, 69.5 percent of all student-athletes had a spring term GPA of 3.0 or higher, which topped the mark of 69 percent set in the fall. The previous high before this year was 67.2 percent in the spring of 2010.

Also, 72.5 percent of all student-athletes currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, besting the total of 67.8 set in spring of 2011.

The women’s golf team, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the national tournament, continues to lead the program in both term and cumulative GPA. The linksters posted a 3.659 term GPA, and maintain a 3.632 cumulative mark among the seven members of the team. Men’s soccer was second, and best among the men’s teams, with a term mark of 3.496 and a 3.444 cumulative GPA.

“I'm very excited about the outstanding effort and academic show of our student-athletes,” said Maritza Ryder, Assistant Dean of Barry’s School of Human Performance & Leisure Sciences who oversees academic services. “These student-athletes have embraced and exceeded a tradition of exemplary academic performance.

"Setting a strong standard for excellence and consistently emphasizing its importance for the good of the student-athletes and their futures creates a culture for achievement and sets a standard for our work each day. I'm thrilled for the student-athletes in their academic and athletic performances, and am very thankful for the intentional and collective efforts of our ECA, faculty, advisors, coaches, administrators, tutors and staff that supports these young folks reach their life and college goals.”

After Amanda Frontino hit a jumper on the Bucs’ first possession of the second half, they led 41-21 and the Sharks never got closer. Perez led five Bucs in double figures with 19 points. Eule followed with 18, Frontino and Hardy each had 11 and Ball added 10. Vernessa Hinnant had 10 to lead the Sharks.

Buccaneers Women's Basketball Await Selection Show

The Bucs' body of work warrants consideration for a national tournament bid. Photo by Envision Sports Media

Barry University will learn its fate when the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament field is announced at 10 p.m. tonight.

The Selection Show will be streamed at www.ncaa.com under the women's basketball Division II links.

Barry, ranked No. 7 in last week's South Region poll, finished the season with an 18-9 mark, which included a 12-4 record in the Sunshine State Conference. The Buccaneers were crowned co-SSC champs, the first league title since 1991.

Barry beat two teams in the top eight of the South Region, including then-No. 14 nationally-ranked Rollins, which owned the top spot in the South at the time. The Bucs also played four teams ranked in the South's top eight, winning twice. Barry was 15-6 in region games and posted a league-best six-game winning streak in a conference that had four teams ranked in the South Region's top eight. Barry went 8-3 on the road.

Barry was competing with Florida Tech, Stillman College and Benedict College for the two remaining spots in the South Region. The top eight teams in each region earn a bid to the national tournament that begins this week.

Stillman and Benedict both lost in the semifinals of their respective postseason conference tournaments. Those two schools were ranked below Florida Tech in last week's regional poll. Florida Tech lost to Rollins in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference tournament. No. 17 nationally-ranked Rollins and No. 19 Florida Southern, the top two seeds in the SSC and South Region, are locks to earn national tourney bids.

The NCAA Division II national tournament runs March 10-23. Eight regions will host a three-round, eight-team event. The winners from each region advance to the Elite Eight and a chance to compete for a national title. This year's national championships will be held in San Antonio at Bill Greehey Arena. The semifinals and finals will be broadcast on ESPNU and ESPN2.

Clayton State is the defending national champ after beating Michigan Tech, 69-50, in last year's title game in St. Joseph, Mo.

Barry Hosts 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney to Support Leukemia

Barry will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for males and females Dec. 8 to benefit the Cesar Odio Leukemia Foundation.

Barry University's Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness and the men's and women's basketball teams will host a Layups for Leukemia 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to support the Cesar Odio Leukemia Foundation on Saturday, Dec. 8 in the Health & Sports Center.

In April, Barry men’s basketball head coach Cesar Odio was diagnosed with Leukemia for the second time. Odio has coached with the Buccaneers’ program for 18 years, directing Barry to three NCAA Division II National Tournaments and establishing a school record for wins (23) in a season twice.

“Coach Odio has been there for so many of us throughout his 18 years here at Barry,” Bucs assistant men’s basketball coach Ryan Saunders said. “We need to come together and show our support for him as he has done for us over the years. He is a fighter, a winner and an unbelievable coach. He truly cares for each and every one of his players, and it is his personal goal to see that his players succeed on the court and in life.”

The tournament is open to Barry students, staff, alumni, members of the community, and friends and family of Odio. Teams of no more than five players will be separated into three divisions:

NBA – players with former college experience
NCAA – anyone without collegiate varsity experience
WNBA – women players

Registration is $75 per team. Donations to the Cesar Odio Leukemia Foundation are also being accepted.

Players will receive t-shirts and gift bags. Winners from each division in both the team and three-point individual competitions will receive trophies. Lunch and drinks will be available.

Additionally, a silent auction will be held at the tournament for a chance to win NBA World Champion Miami Heat and Miami Marlins tickets, Miami Dolphins items, Black & Decker and Stanley products, Nike items, a foursome golf outing at a local course, restaurant gift cards and a seven-night Caribbean cruise with balcony accommodations for two.

For more information, or to register for the tournament, click here. Interested participants may also contact Andy Havens at ahavens@mail.barry.edu, or call 305-899-4776.

Women's Basketball Win Streak Ends In Loss To Warriors

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s five-game winning streak came to an end in a 64-60 non-conference loss to Wisconsin Lutheran Thursday.

In a game that witnessed eight lead changes and three ties, Wisconsin Lutheran overcame a six-point second half lead by the Buccaneers to win its seventh game in nine tries this year. Barry, which fell to 6-4, will resume conference play Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. when Lynn University visits Miami Shores.

Barry led by six with 12:01 in the second half, following a layup by Danielle DeBerry. But Wisconsin Lutheran’s Rachel Hoft canned a three at the 11:16 mark to pull the Warriors within a point, and Shavon Dillon hit a driving layup to put Wisconsin Lutheran ahead, 50-49, at the 9:27 mark.

DeBerry sank a pair of free throws to inch Barry back in front, 51-50, 16 seconds later. Yvonne Houston scored on a layup four possessions later as the Bucs crept back out to a three-point lead. Rachel Johnson’s triple with 6:52 to play pushed Wisconsin Lutheran ahead to stay. Barry didn’t hit a field goal in the last 2:24 of the game.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- This is not what the Buccaneers were expecting. Not a loss. Not by 30.

Rather, the Sunshine State Conference frontrunning Barry University women's basketball team was hoping to maintain its perch atop the league standings with No. 11 Rollins College. But after suffering an 80-50 home loss to Florida Southern Saturday, the Bucs dropped a game behind the Tars in the league race.

Rollins beat Saint Leo, 86-50.

Barry (15-7, 9-3 SSC) never led in a game it shot 31 percent from the floor. Florida Southern (18-5, 9-4) crept within a half-game of the Bucs for second place in the league after shooting 43.9 percent.

The Buccaneers trailed by six at the halftime intermission, but were outscored, 47-23, in the second half in a runaway win for the Moccasins. Alex Zamora was the lone Buccaneer to reach double figures in scoring. She had 10 points and six rebounds.

Michaela Hawley scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Florida Southern, which hit 12 of 27 three-pointers, including a 53.3 percent effort from beyond the arc in the second half. Megan Dzikas canned seven of 12 from beyond the arc, finishing with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Danielle Walsh and Sofie Lundberg had 11 points apiece for the Mocs.

Bucs Women's Hoops Trip Tritons on Last-Second Shot

Yvonne Houston hit the gamewinner with two seconds left in Barry's win Saturday. Photo by Jason Roberts

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Yvonne Houston scored off an alley-oop feed from Shanna Suttington with two seconds left as Barry knocked off Eckerd on the road Saturday, 63-62.

In a game that was tight the entire second half, Barry saved its best heroics for the closing seconds to win its eighth road game of the season. The Bucs and Tritons battled to 14 lead changes and six ties in a back-and-forth game worth the price of admission.

The Buccaneers (16-8, 10-4 Sunshine State Conference) close the regular season with two home games this week, beginning with No. 9 Rollins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Health & Sports Center.

Tasheema Lewis scored down low, and Jen Mitchell drained a three-point goal with 4:48 left to give the Buccaneers a 53-51 lead before Taylor Young hit a runner to tie it for the Tritons. Lewis scored on a dish from Danielle DeBerry and then hit a baseline jumper to beat the shot clock buzzer, giving Barry a three-point lead.

Eckerd (13-10, 6-8) tied the game on Taylor Young’s three-point play, and went up 60-57 on Linsey Niles triple at the 1:45 mark. Mitchell forced a turnover, which led to Danielle DeBerry’s transition basket that cut the Tritons lead to 60-59.

Lewis finished with eight points and two blocks. Houston scored 18 points and had eight rebounds and two steals. Suttington had eight points and seven assists. Mitchell scored nine. Krystal Charles had 16 points, and Kati Rausberg 14 for Eckerd.

Barry trailed by four five minutes into the second half before Mitchell knocked down a jumper from the free throw line to cut it to 36-34. Houston buried a three from the top of the key to keep the Bucs within two , and then she hit another field goal on the next trip down the floor to tie it at 41-41.

Lewis, who battled hard down low in some critical second half minutes, hit a baseline jumper with just under 10:00 left, and Mitchell canned a shot from the wing to give Barry a 45-44 lead. Taylor Bestry’s triple put the Tritons ahead by four, but Suttington drilled a triple of her own as the shot clock wore down to pull Barry within one.

Barry led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Eckerd stormed back to take a 31-30 lead into the break.

The Bucs shot 42.4 percent from the floor, hitting 25 of 59 field goals. The Tritons were 19 of 47 for 40.4 percent. Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds. Barry was 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Eckerd sank 18 of 25 free throws.

Women's Basketball Brings In Trio To Strengthen Frontcourt

L-R Danika Pisconeri, Emily Schahczinski and Alesha Jenkins.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—After restocking the backcourt earlier in the summer, Barry women’s basketball coach Bill Sullivan has some reinforcements for the front court on the way now as well.

The Bucs will have two new transfers and one freshman to help in the post when fall semester opens in Alesha Jenkins, Danika Pisconeri and Emily Schahczinski.

Jenkins, a 5-11 product out of Coconut Creek High in Broward County, brings two years of NCAA Division I experience from North Carolina Central.

“Alesha is skilled offensively and a warrior on the boards,” Sullivan said. “We are excited that Alesha is a member of our team as she provides us with experience at the post position.”

In two seasons with the Eagles, she played in 49 games, averaging 3.1 points and 3.0 rebounds. As a sophomore, she led team in scoring twice and in rebounding six times. She will have two seasons remaining with the Buccaneers

Pisconeri is a 5-11 post from Australia who comes from Edith Cowan College in Perth, Australia.

“Danika brings us excellent rebounding and solid defense at the post position,” Sullivan said. “Offensively, we like the fact that she can score with her back to the basket and also has the ability to hit shots beyond the three-point line.”

Pisconeri played with the development squad for the West Coast Waves. She captained the Western Australia state team in 2008 and helped WA to the bronze medal in the Under-20 Australian National Championships in 2009, ranking in the Top-10 in the national tournament in rebounds and blocked shots.

The Bucs’ lone freshman, Schahczinski is the tallest of the recruits at 6-0 out of Elkhorn High in Wisconsin.

“Emily gives us much needed height and strength at the post position,” Sullivan said. “We are impressed with her unselfishness and her work ethic as we will rely on Emily’s rebounding and defensive abilities to give us a strong low post presence.”

Schahczinski was selected to the Division II All-Star Team by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) after an MVP season for the Elkhorn Elks where she averaged 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She played four years for the Wisconsin Lakers AAU team as they won the United States Junior National championship in 2012 in Champaign, Illinois.

The trio joins the four guards, transfers Dominique Dixon from Detroit-Mercy and Tyler Hardy from Wayne State University in Michigan and freshmen Stephanie Ball from Fort Pierce and Champ Horice from Apopka.

The women’s team opens the season at the West Florida Tip-off Tournament Nov. 9-10, taking on the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes and the host Argonauts.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Glaucia Lehn had a smile on her face that summed up the story.

Barry had the nets to prove it.

The Buccaneers beat Saint Leo, 71-51, Saturday in the final regular season home game to give Barry women's basketball a share of the Sunshine State Conference title.

"It's been amazing," Lehn said after a cluster of departing Bucs seniors gathered around for a post-game celebration. "It's been a great senior year."

Barry earned the No. 3 seed and a right to host a first round SSC Tournament game Wednesday night at Health & Sports Center. The Bucs (18-8, 12-4 SSC) will play Florida Tech to open the postseason tourney.

The Buccaneers cut down the nets after a game in which they converted 23 Lions turnovers into 31 points and outscored Saint Leo, 30-18, in the paint.

Barry shot 41 percent from the floor, and never trailed in a game the Lions (7-19, 1-15) cut to one, 21-20, with 5:03 left in the first half. The Buccaneers built a 15-point lead 54 seconds into the second half on a pair of Danielle DeBerry free throws, but the Lions whittled it down to five on a basket by Chelsea Williams, who finished with 23 points and two blocks, at the 11:36 mark.

Jen Mitchell scored with 9:52 to play to push the Bucs' lead back to 11, and Alex Zamora scored in the paint with 8:59 to play as Barry extended it to 52-40. Yvonne Houston's layup and Jackie Perez's three-pointer with 5:44 on the clock gave the Buccaneers a 21-point lead.

Saint Leo's Chelsea Connelly had 10 points and 13 of the Lions' 49 rebounds.

Nine players scored for Barry, four of which reached double figures. Houston had 23 points. Zamora finished with 16 points, nine boards and a block. Shanna Suttington had 10 points, nine assists and four steals. DeBerry had 10 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block.

Women's Basketball Schedule Is More "Home" Friendly

For the first time in several years, the Barry women’s basketball team will not be road warriors, as the Bucs will have 14 of 26 games at home in 2012-13.

“For the past several years the majority of our non-conference games have been away from home,” head coach Bill Sullivan said. “Last year, for example, we started the season playing six of our first seven games on the road. This season, with such a young team, we are thrilled that we will be playing most of our games in November and December here at Barry in front of our home fans.”

The Bucs tip-off the season at the West Florida Tip-off Classic, taking on Georgia Southwestern from the Peachbelt Conference and the host Argonauts from the Gulf South. The Hurricanes, coming off an 18-9 campaign that ranked third in the PBC West, have to replace their top five scorers. The Argonauts, with two returning starters, went 10-17 last year and finished tied for fourth in the GSC.

After the long trip up to Pensacola, the Bucs spend the rest of the semester in South Florida, including six of the next seven games at home. For the first time since Sullivan’s second season in 2006-07, the Bucs will face off against a pair of teams from Puerto Rico as the Jerezanas from Rio Piedras and Janes from Mayaguez visit the Health & Sports Center on Nov. 14 and 16 respectively.

Sandwiched by a pair of local NAIA teams in Florida Memorial (Nov. 28) and Johnson & Wales (Dec. 14), Barry gets Sunshine State Conference play started as they host the Panthers of Florida Tech on Dec. 1. It will give the Bucs a chance to avenge their SSC Tournament loss from a year ago, as the Panthers ended the Bucs’ season with a 71-68 win in the HSC.

Closing out the first semester, the Bucs will play in the Cruzin’ Classic at Nova Southeastern against Drury. The Panthers won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Eastern Division and played in the NCAA Tournament after going 20-8 last year.

Coming out of the holiday break, the Bucs host the Riverhawks of Massachusetts-Lowell on Dec. 30. The Riverhawks return four of their top five scorers from an 11-16 team.

In January, the Bucs jump into the heart of SSC play with trips to Florida Southern (Jan. 5), Eckerd (Jan. 19) and Nova Southeastern (Jan. 30), while hosting Lynn (Jan. 9), Saint Leo (Jan. 12), Rollins (Jan. 23) and Tampa (Jan. 26). In addition, they will make their annual pilgrimage to the Greene Complex to take on Palm Beach Atlantic.

In February, the schedule flips, with Bucs making trips to Florida Tech (Feb. 2), Saint Leo (Feb. 9), Lynn (Feb. 13), Tampa (Feb. 23) and Rollins (Feb. 27). Florida Southern (Feb. 6) and Eckerd (Feb. 16) make their return trips to Miami Shores, as do the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic. The regular season closes out on Mar. 2 as the Bucs host the Nova Southeastern Sharks.

The Sunshine State Conference Tournament (Mar. 6-10) has a new look this season. For the first time since 2007, all 18 SSC men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete in the tournament, which will be hosted at a neutral facility for the first time since 2001. The SSC Basketball Championship, hosted at The Lakeland Center from 1995-2001, had been conducted at campus sites since that time. The tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bucs get the preseason started with three exhibition games, facing Miami-Dade College at home on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 pm, Northwood in West Palm Beach on Oct. 29 and FIU at U.S. Century Bank Arena on Nov. 2.
