Dinner, Reception on March 29 to Honor President Whitlock

A dinner in honor of retiring Eastern Kentucky University President Doug Whitlock will be held Friday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Keen Johnson Ballroom.

Dr. Whitlock, who has served the University in various administrative capacities for more than 40 years, including the last six as its 11th president, announced his retirement at the beginning of the 2012-13 academic year, effective July 31, 2013.

The appreciation dinner, which is sponsored by the EKU Board of Regents, is open to the University community and public. Tickets are $50 each, and reservations should be made no later than Tuesday, March 26 by calling 859-622-1583. Half of the proceeds will go to the Doug and Joanne Whitlock Scholarship Fund. Those unable to attend the event but who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund should send donations to University Development, CPO 19A, Eastern Kentucky University, 521 Lancaster Ave., Richmond, Ky., 40475-9980.

A reception, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in Walnut Hall of the Keen Johnson Building, will precede the dinner and is free and open to the public.

The dinner (business attire) will feature a special musical salute as well as tributes to President Whitlock on behalf of the Commonwealth, higher education, campus and local communities, and Eastern alumni.

President Whitlock has initiated and overseen capital, regional stewardship, student success and academic research projects that have shaped EKU’s future. These include the EKU Center for the Arts, New Science Building, Noel Studio for Academic Creativity, the Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technologies, and a network of community extension agents. A Richmond native and two-time graduate of Eastern, he also has been very active in community and regional affairs, including service on the Madison County Schools Board of Education.

"The Board appreciates President Whitlock’s many years of dedicated service to the University,” said Craig Turner, chair of the EKU Board of Regents. “It has enriched the lives of countless students and colleagues and created an indelible legacy.

“Certainly, few love this university as President Whitlock does,” Turner added, “and this reception and dinner will honor his life and many accomplishments on behalf of Eastern. As he and Joanne enter this new chapter of their lives, we wish them only the best.”
