Edinboro University music professors perform at U.S. Navy Band’s prestigious symposium

Two Edinboro University music professors performed recently at the United States Navy Band’s International Saxophone Symposium on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Dr. Patrick Jones, a Yamaha Performing Artist who also teaches saxophone master classes throughout the region, received a juried invitation after his proposal to premier Edinboro Professor Emeritus Lee Williams’ “Suite of Dreams” composition was accepted by the symposium.

Jones, who performed Williams’ composition on the alto saxophone, was joined at the symposium by Edinboro’s Dr. Kristine West Denton, who accompanied him on the piano.

“It is quite an honor and speaks highly of the caliber of our music faculty to be invited to play at these international events,” said Dr. Gary Grant, chair of Edinboro’s Music Department. “That Dr. Denton went along to accompany Dr. Jones also demonstrates the wonderful collaboration within our department.”

Jones also said he was honored to be invited to such a prestigious symposium, where about 150 musicians from the United States and abroad performed during the two-day event. Jones and Denton performed January 5.

Edinboro’s music faculty perform at many events throughout the region, and also offer noon-hour First Friday Concerts each month during the fall and spring semesters.

First Friday Concerts from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center’s Recital Hall resume February 1 with Jacqueline Black on cello and Erik Mann on guitar. The March 1 concert features soprano, Dr. Anne Ortega, along with Dr. Denton on piano and Dr. Jones on clarinet. On April 5, LeAnne Wistrom will perform on flute, joined by Dr. Denton on piano.

All First Friday Concerts are free and open to the public.
