Gov. Steve Beshear has reappointed Dr. Robert S. Weise, professor of history at Eastern Kentucky University, to the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board, representing architectural historians.
A noted Appalachian scholar, Weise has produced nearly 30 conference papers, 10 journal articles, and a book, “Grasping at Independence: Debt, Male Authority and Mineral Rights in Appalachian Kentucky, 1850-1915.” He frequently speaks to campus groups and service region organizations on Appalachian h istory and environmental issues, past and present, confronting the region.
Weise, who joined the University in 1999, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Virginia.
The Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board is composed of 11 members appointed by the governor,chosen based upon their professional expertise in the fields of history, archaeology, architectural history, architecture and historic preservation. Individuals who do not meet the professional criteria may also be appointed to the board based upon their interest and involvement in historic preservation.
The board is charged with evaluating eligibility criteria for National Register nominations from Kentucky prior to their submission to the National Park Service, which administers the program in partnership with state historic preservation offices, including the Kentucky Heritage Council.
Weise’s term will expire July 15, 2015.
