Dr. Margaret Farley, who proposes a justice-based framework for Christian sexual ethics in her award-winning and critically praised book “Just Love,” will be the next speaker in Edinboro University’s James F. Drane Religion Lecture Series.
Dr. Farley will speak on the topic “Gender, Sexuality and Ethics: New Perspectives” with a humanities focus on Monday, April 8, and with a science focus on Tuesday, April 9. Both presentations will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Louis C. Cole Auditorium – Memorial Hall, and are free and open to the public.
Dr. Farley is the Gilbert L. Stark Professor Emerita of Christian Ethics at Yale University Divinity School, where she was a colleague of the lecture series’ namesake.
Dr. Drane, professor emeritus of bioethics at Edinboro, said Dr. Farley “gives us an alternative to narrowly constructed ethical systems on the issues of sexuality. In a culture defined by moral chaos in the area of sexuality, Margaret Farley provides a perspective based on justice, respect and fairness in relationships.”
He calls “Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics,” published in 2006 and winner of the Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion in 2008, “a contemporary classic in Christian sexual ethics.”
Dr. Farley also is the author or co-editor of six additional books and more than 100 articles and chapters of books on topics of ethical methodology, medical ethics, sexual ethics, social ethics, historical theological ethics, ethics and spirituality, and feminist ethics.
The recipient of 11 honorary degrees and a variety of fellowships and awards, she is past president of both the Society of Christian Ethics and the Catholic Theological Society of America.
