Baldwin City, Kan. — Baker Orange Online was recognized on Saturday, Nov. 3, with its first national Pacemaker Award at the Associated Collegiate Press and National College Media Convention in Chicago.pacemakergroup2

Baker's site, thebakerorange.com, was one of five to be recognized in the category for schools with an enrollment of 5,000 or fewer students. The Pacemaker is regarded as the Pulitzer Prize in student journalism.

Marlee Johnson, a 2012 graduate, was the Orange online editor in 2011-12 and now works for PlattForm Advertising. Sara Bell, now a junior, was the assistant online editor. Meagan Thomas, now a senior, was the overall Orange editor in the spring of 2012, and Rachel Hawkins, a 2012 Baker graduate now working at Pennington and Company, served as editor fall 2011. Gwyn Mellinger and Dave Bostwick were the Orange's advisers.

"I think that winning this particular award in the online division suggests that our program and our students are embracing new opportunities," Bostwick said. "I'm very happy for Marlee Johnson. She was constantly testing new ways to deliver content and pushing other staff members to do the same. A good online editor has to take time to experiment, and Marlee definitely did that."

Also at the conference, the Baker Orange received the "Best of Show" trophy in the category of four-year non-weekly for its Oct. 19, 2012 print edition. Chris Duderstadt is the Orange editor this fall.

"We've made a lot of changes to our program in the past two years," Bostwick said. "These awards are really a confirmation that our entire mass media faculty and students are on the right track together."
