Edinboro University faculty, staff, students to celebrate Women’s History Month with myriad campus activities - Kicks off Sunday, March 3

Edinboro University’s faculty, staff and students will come together for a variety of events in March to celebrate Women’s History Month.

This year’s Women’s History Month line-up includes a dozen and a half dynamic campus events highlighted by a March 7 panel discussion with three Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education university presidents – all women.

Other highlighted panel discussions and lectures include Women in Flight; Religion and Gender; Tituba: The Reluctant Witch of Salem; Real Desperate Housewives: How So-Called “Reality TV” is Bad for Women; and even Women of Zombie Cinema!

With one presentation seeking the address the question, “Can Women be Sexists?”, the month features additional equally fascinating, motivating and controversial topics, according Dr. Nina Thumser, Chair of the Edinboro University Women’s History Month 2013 Committee.

The PASSHE Female President’s Panel scheduled for Thursday, March 7, at 2 p.m. in the Frank G. Pogue Student Center’s Multipurpose Room, includes Edinboro’s first female president, Dr. Julie E. Wollman, and Clarion University President Karen Whitney and Slippery Rock University President Cheryl Norton. Moderated by Edinboro’s Dr. Rhonda Matthews, of the Sociology Department, panel members will discuss women in leadership and field audience questions.

Women’s History Month programming has not only grown significantly at Edinboro during the past several years, but also has become extremely popular with student, faculty and staff audiences of both genders.   

All Women’s History Month events are free and open to the public. All are sponsored by Edinboro’s Women’s Studies Committee in collaboration with Edinboro’s History, Anthropology, and World Languages Department; Student Government Association; Office of the President; Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Admissions Office; Math and Computer Sciences Department; Math Club; and History Club.

In addition to Chair Thumser, members of the Women’s History Month 2013 Committee include Dr. Jerra Jenrette, Ms. Vicky Wetsell, Ms. Thasia Frazzini, Dr. Martha Donkor, Dr. Rhonda Matthews, Ms. Susan Woodland, and Ms. Sierra Stakes.

Fifteen students and staff from Eastern recently attended this year's National Association for Campus Activities conference at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Eastern's student Campus Activity Board (CAB) coordinators took home honors for several categories including Excellence in Programming, Best Poster, Best Themed Campaign and Best Traditional Promotion for their division.

Participating students included Amy Dillon, Samantha Codding, Sydney Hanlon, Dane Paracuelles, Giancarlos Perez, Keith Sunthorn, Thomas Balestracci, Solinda Keth, Jessica Johnson, Melissa Groccia, Emilee Blais, Samantha Stevens, Lauren Hopper, Kimberly Perna and Alexa Senia.

The National Association for Campus Activities advances campus activities in higher education through a business and learning partnership, creating educational and business opportunities for its school and professional members. NACA has more than 950 college and university members and over 550 associate members who represent artists, lecturers and performers.

Senior Has Front-Row Seat for Presidential Inauguration Activities as Communication Intern

An Eastern Kentucky University senior will experience Inauguration Day activities from a perspective not shared by many – behind the scenes.

Nicolette Coontz, a broadcasting major from Stanford, will be in Washington, D.C., Jan. 18-23 working with former Florida governor Jeb Bush as an inaugural communication event intern. She is one of three lead interns for the educational events associated with Inauguration Day. Coontz will also assist prominent political analysts James Carville, who directed the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton, and Mary Matalin.

Her duties will include attending press events to discuss the history and projected future of the Electoral College process, and working with the media and various inaugural conferences that will be taking place during the inaugural season.

On Inauguration Day, she will be part of a press team in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History on the National Mall during the ceremony, and then move to assist sideline coordination of the inaugural parade.  She will also attend the evening Gala Celebration to commemorate the 52nd Presidential Inauguration.

“Eastern Kentucky University has prepared me in various ways for this internship,” Coontz said. “The Department of Communication has truly molded me into a knowledgeable young adult and equipped me with the necessary skills needed to work in those specialized career fields.”

Coontz, who was crowned EKU Homecoming Queen last fall and serves as president of the mass communications honor society Kappa Tau Alpha, also credits her involvement with campus organizations for helping her gain the perseverance needed to achieve her aspirations.

A two-month summer internship with the London-based Channel 5 during the 2012 Olympic Games also strengthened her goal to become a news broadcaster or media communications specialist after graduation.
