Women's Basketball Win Streak Ends In Loss To Warriors

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s five-game winning streak came to an end in a 64-60 non-conference loss to Wisconsin Lutheran Thursday.

In a game that witnessed eight lead changes and three ties, Wisconsin Lutheran overcame a six-point second half lead by the Buccaneers to win its seventh game in nine tries this year. Barry, which fell to 6-4, will resume conference play Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. when Lynn University visits Miami Shores.

Barry led by six with 12:01 in the second half, following a layup by Danielle DeBerry. But Wisconsin Lutheran’s Rachel Hoft canned a three at the 11:16 mark to pull the Warriors within a point, and Shavon Dillon hit a driving layup to put Wisconsin Lutheran ahead, 50-49, at the 9:27 mark.

DeBerry sank a pair of free throws to inch Barry back in front, 51-50, 16 seconds later. Yvonne Houston scored on a layup four possessions later as the Bucs crept back out to a three-point lead. Rachel Johnson’s triple with 6:52 to play pushed Wisconsin Lutheran ahead to stay. Barry didn’t hit a field goal in the last 2:24 of the game.

Houston finished with 15 points and five rebounds, and DeBerry had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Dillon scored a game-high 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting. Johnson added 16 points.

Barry’s Alex Zamora collected 15 rebounds, and scored eight points while blocking three shots. Shanna Suttington scored nine points for the Bucs, who shot 36.9 percent from the field.

Barry struggled beyond the arc, going 3 of 18 for 16.7 percent. Wisconsin Lutheran canned seven of 14 triples, and outrebounded Barry, 42-39.
