PORTALES--Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Music will host its 13th annual Jazz Fest on March 21-22 in the Music Building on the Portales campus.

It is free and open to the public.

Special guests will be Chad Eby, the Onate High School Jazz Band, and the Clovis High School Jazz Band.

Eby, associate professor of jazz saxophone at the University of North Carolina in Greensborough, will give a master class on jazz improvisation at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the Music Building. Those interested in performing should bring their instrument.

At 7 p.m. on March 21 the Onate High School Jazz Band and the ENMU Faculty Jazz Combo will perform. The ENMU Faculty Jazz Combo consists of Neil Rutland, instructor of percussion, Travis Erwin, instructor of guitar, with Eby as special guest.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, March 22, the Clovis High School Jazz Band, the ENMU Student Jazz Combo, and the ENMU Jazz Band will perform. Both ENMU ensembles are under the instruction of ENMU faculty member Ann Bradfield, professor of jazz and saxophone and Jazz Fest director.

Both concerts will be held in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.

ENMU Hosting New Mexico Art Exhibit

Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Art will host It’s About Time: 12,000 Years of Art in New Mexico from March 22-April 19 in Runnels Gallery in Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University on the Portales campus.

The viewing hours are from 8 a.m. to midnight on Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to midnight on Sundays. There will be a closing reception from 5-6:30 p.m. on April 19.
Both events are free and open to the public.
This exhibit is a traveling an overview of New Mexico art to 11 small museums throughout the state to celebrate the centennial of New Mexico statehood.  The exhibition presents New Mexico’s vibrant artistic heritage beginning 14,000 years ago and ending with contemporary images. These connections and influences have shaped the visual arts that define New Mexico.

The exhibit was curated by the New Mexico Museum of Artas part of the museum’s regional outreach program. The pieces of art use Native American, Hispanic and European American art to tell the cultural history of New Mexico.
The exhibit has been funded by the New Mexico Humanities Council and Newman’s Own Foundation, and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University will host “Junior Preview Day” for high school juniors beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, on the Portales campus.

The event will allow high school juniors and their parents to meet faculty and ENMU students, learn about academic programs, financial aid, tutoring, student organizations, and tour the residence halls and campus.

Door prizes include iPods, T-Shirts and $500 scholarships.

PORTALES – The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Eastern New Mexico University is hosting the 2013 Computer Programming Contest from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 30, in Room 107 of the University Computer Center on the Portales campus.

The Division I Contest is open to high school and college students who have completed no more than two semesters of programming classes at ENMU.

The Division II Contest is open to all other ENMU students.

The programming environment will include Python or Java running on Students Learning System (Linux server) or on windows using NetBeans or IDLE.

Contestants may bring laptops and books, but cannot use pre-prepared programs, and cannot access the Internet.

Rules will be emailed to all pre-registered contestants in March.  Prizes and certificates will be awarded.

To pre-register, email your full name (with ENMU ID and major if an ENMU student) and contest division by March 22 to Sunny Choi at sunny.choi@enmu.edu.

ENMU Hosting Lecture on Minority Assimilation in France

PORTALES–The Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales is hosting a guest lecture on "National and Minority Cultures in 21st Century France: North African and Pied-Noir Cultural Associations" by Victoria M. Phaneuf at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, in Room 110 of the Art and Anthropology Building.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Many nations are currently experiencing increased instances of social conflict and unrest arising from internal tensions among multicultural populations. France offers a particularly clear example of these processes. Despite structural and social impediments, minorities are encouraged to integrate into the national mainstream and to avoid communitarian and community-building practices. Two groups at the heart of recent debates are the Pied-Noir and North African populations.

This lecture examines how minorities use cultural associations, or social clubs, to assert their right to membership in the French nation while retaining their cultural difference. Specifically, they use performances of minority culture, history, and national membership to draw audiences and open discussions on their role in France. In the process, individuals redefine themselves both as members of a minority community and as active citizens in the French nation.

Phaneuf received her Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology from the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher with the Bureau of Applied Anthropology on a project investigating the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on communities in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

ENMU Hosting Lecture on Chaco Culture

PORTALES–The annual Cynthia Irwin Williams Lecture will be from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University. It is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker will be Catherine Cameron, professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado. She works in the northern part of the American Southwest focusing especially on the Chaco and post-Chaco eras (A.D. 900-1300).

Her research interests include prehistoric migration, the evolution of complex societies through the study of regional social and political systems, methodology of defining social boundaries in the past, and prehistoric architecture.

She works in southeastern Utah at the Bluff Great House, a Chacoan site and in nearby Comb Wash, and published a monograph on this research in 2009 ("Chaco and After" in the Northern San Juan, University of Arizona Press). She also studies captives in prehistory, especially their role in cultural transmission.

She published an edited volume on this topic in 2008 (Invisible Citizens, Captives and Their Consequences, University of Utah Press). She has been co-editor of the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory since 2000.
