Senior Accepted into Summer Public Health Scholars Program at Columbia University

An Eastern Kentucky University senior has been accepted into the Summer Public Health Scholars Program at Columbia University, the prestigious Ivy League institution in New York City.

Stephanie Smith, a public health major from Barbourville, will take field trips to various neighborhoods in and around The Big Apple to observe public health interventions and programs in operation. She will also attend lecture-based courses and work in small groups with teaching assistants to discuss practical applications of class studies.

Before heading to New York, she will attend a one-week orientation at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Smith will spend the following nine weeks based at the Columbia University Medical Center. All expenses are covered by the program.

“I am most excited about gaining hands-on experience in the field of public health,” the 2009 Knox Central High School graduate said. “With our competitive job market now, this experience will set me apart from other potential employees. I will have the opportunity to learn from some of the most prestigious public health leaders and network with people who could open other doors for my career.”

Smith, the daughter of Darrell and Lynn Smith and granddaughter of Patty and Russell Smith, was recently named the Outstanding Senior in Community Health at Eastern. She maintains a 3.4 GPA in addition to her active role in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, in which she has held several leadership positions. Smith also represented the Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Society on EKU’s Homecoming Court last fall.

“The ‘Eastern Experience’ has given me the opportunity to grow as a person,” Smith said. “I feel accomplished to have almost four years of undergraduate school under my belt. My family has always been so understanding and supportive of my experience while at EKU and … my drive for success has come from the desire to make them proud. I am so thankful to have had the chance to spend my college career at a university I love.”

Smith also credited faculty in the Department of Health Promotion and Administration for that growth.

“(They) have all made a huge impact on the success of my college career,” she said. “Laurie Larkin, Karen Hunter and Michelyn Bhandari have always provided me with encouragement and support to excel in public health. I could not be more thankful to have them as mentors.”

After the summer program, Smith plans to return to EKU to begin studies in the University’s Master’s of Public Health Program toward her goal of working with an international health agency.

For now, though, her heart and mind are on the upcoming summer in one of the world’s greatest cities, a place she has never visited.

“I am looking forward to experiencing what it is like to live in the city and in such a diverse part of our country,” Smith said. “I already have a countdown set, and I can’t wait to take full advantage of the amazing experiences I will have.”

Jones, the daughter of Amy Webb and Randall Jones, is a 2009 graduate of Corbin High School. Named last year as EKU’s Outstanding Junior in Community Health, she maintains an overall GPA of 3.54, is a member of Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Society and the secretary of the campus chapter of the Kentucky Public Health Association. She will graduate this December.

"Being at Eastern has given me so many opportunities,” Jones said. “I’ve become a part of student organizations and met so many amazing people. All the professors in the department want us to achieve the highest goals possible.” She credited Dr. Michelyn Bhandari, in particular, for pointing her to the Columbia Scholars Program.

Jones said she is uncertain of her career plans, adding they might include working for the CDC or, for a time, as a Peace Corps volunteer.

For now, though, she’s looking forward to what promises to be a memorable summer.

"I’ve never been to New York City,” she said, “but I’ve wanted to go forever.”

Asllani’s paper titled ‘The Use of Precedent in U.S. Supreme Court Oral Argument’ was inspired by her viewing U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments as the personal guest of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last March.

Twelve Political Science and Legal Studies students visited the Supreme Court as a part of the D.C. Internship Experience organized by ECU Professor Dr. Christine Pappas.

“While sitting in the court room and listening to the Justices, it was surprising to realize that they talk more about hypothetical issues rather than citing past cases,” said Asllani.

After formulating the idea for the paper, Asllani spent hours analyzing the transcripts of other oral arguments to see if the pattern held. She concluded that over the last 10 years there has been a decline in the use of legal arguments.

“Winning was a privilege and a grand opportunity for me as an undergraduate student. I was honored to be awarded with the prize,” Asllani said.

Asllani is the third ECU political Science student to win the award in the last five years.

“I was so delighted to learn that Iva has won this award. Her hard work really paid off,” said Pappas. “Our program’s focus on undergraduate research allows graduates to elevate their skills and become very competitive in the job search and law school application process.”

He was a Pauls Valley High School graduate, but also attended Ada High School and Byng High School. His passion was athletics as he was involved in several sports. Harrel was described as a natural-born competitor and wanted to excel in everything from recreational softball to college algebra.

After graduation from Pauls Valley High, he attended Oklahoma State University his freshman year. He was a life-long OSU Cowboys’ fan and was able to live his dream of attending school there before coming ‘home’ to ECU.

Edinboro University’s first bagpiping major to present senior recital - Free performance to showcase piper’s skill

The unmistakable hum and skirl of bagpipes are integral to the soundtrack of campus life at Edinboro University, where the Scottish heritage of the school's founders remains a vital part of the University identity.

Few Edinboro pipers, however, can match the energy and passion of senior Sean Patrick Regan, who soon will have a claim that no piper anywhere can match: the world's first music education degree with a concentration in piping.

Regan, 24, a Pittsburgher who expects to graduate in May, will present his senior recital, "An Afternoon on the Pipes," on Saturday, December 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the University's Cole Auditorium-Memorial Hall. Admission is free.

The recital will include both modern and classical arrangements from the piping repertoire, including the debut of an arrangement for organ and bagpipe. Regan will perform with recorded accompaniment, most of which he performed himself, including percussion and additional bagpiping.

"At any given time, you'll hear between two and four of me playing," he said.

A piper for 16 years and the son and grandson of pipers – his father and mentor, Patrick Regan, is instructor of bagpiping at Edinboro University – Sean Patrick Regan has been performing professionally for more than a decade. In 2012 alone, he has been Grade 1 Midwest Champion, winner of the "Best of the Boro" talent show and Champion Supreme of the World Online Piping & Drumming Championship.

Sean Patrick Regan is the youngest person, at age 19, to teach as a guest instructor at the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland, and the youngest to found and lead a bagpipe summer camp. The Edinboro Scottish Arts Summer Camp on the University campus will return for a second year in July 2013.

When he isn't performing solo, Sean Patrick Regan teaches privately, both in person and via Skype, and is involved in the EUP Pipe Band, the EUP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Great Lakes Pipe Band.

On track to release a new album in December, he looks ahead to continuing his professional career with an aim of entertaining and teaching people of all ages who have an interest and passion for music and the Great Highland Bagpipe.

Senior Has Front-Row Seat for Presidential Inauguration Activities as Communication Intern

An Eastern Kentucky University senior will experience Inauguration Day activities from a perspective not shared by many – behind the scenes.

Nicolette Coontz, a broadcasting major from Stanford, will be in Washington, D.C., Jan. 18-23 working with former Florida governor Jeb Bush as an inaugural communication event intern. She is one of three lead interns for the educational events associated with Inauguration Day. Coontz will also assist prominent political analysts James Carville, who directed the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton, and Mary Matalin.

Her duties will include attending press events to discuss the history and projected future of the Electoral College process, and working with the media and various inaugural conferences that will be taking place during the inaugural season.

On Inauguration Day, she will be part of a press team in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History on the National Mall during the ceremony, and then move to assist sideline coordination of the inaugural parade.  She will also attend the evening Gala Celebration to commemorate the 52nd Presidential Inauguration.

“Eastern Kentucky University has prepared me in various ways for this internship,” Coontz said. “The Department of Communication has truly molded me into a knowledgeable young adult and equipped me with the necessary skills needed to work in those specialized career fields.”

Coontz, who was crowned EKU Homecoming Queen last fall and serves as president of the mass communications honor society Kappa Tau Alpha, also credits her involvement with campus organizations for helping her gain the perseverance needed to achieve her aspirations.

A two-month summer internship with the London-based Channel 5 during the 2012 Olympic Games also strengthened her goal to become a news broadcaster or media communications specialist after graduation.

“While sitting in the court room and listening to the Justices, it was surprising to realize that they talk more about hypothetical issues rather than citing past cases,” said Asllani.

After formulating the idea for the paper, Asllani spent hours analyzing the transcripts of other oral arguments to see if the pattern held. She concluded that over the last 10 years there has been a decline in the use of legal arguments.

“Winning was a privilege and a grand opportunity for me as an undergraduate student. I was honored to be awarded with the prize,” Asllani said.

Asllani is the third ECU political Science student to win the award in the last five years.

“I was so delighted to learn that Iva has won this award. Her hard work really paid off,” said Pappas. “Our program’s focus on undergraduate research allows graduates to elevate their skills and become very competitive in the job search and law school application process.”

A scholarship, in memory of Jeremy Harrel, has been established for a Pauls Valley High School senior who plans to attend East Central University.

Harrel, who was an ECU sophomore majoring in business, died in a car wreck on Dec. 6, 2011 and, with the one-year anniversary of his passing approaching, friends, family and the ECU Foundation have established a memorial scholarship in his honor.

He was a Pauls Valley High School graduate, but also attended Ada High School and Byng High School. His passion was athletics as he was involved in several sports. Harrel was described as a natural-born competitor and wanted to excel in everything from recreational softball to college algebra.

After graduation from Pauls Valley High, he attended Oklahoma State University his freshman year. He was a life-long OSU Cowboys’ fan and was able to live his dream of attending school there before coming ‘home’ to ECU.

Harrel, who was noted for his remarkable ability to make people smile and laugh, was well-liked and a positive influence to everyone. He also spent a lot of time with friends and made a permanent mark on all of their lives.

Saturday Senior Day Honors Hoops Heroes

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's and women's basketball teams will honor its seniors Saturday when the Bucs host Saint Leo in the regular season finale.

Barry's women tip off at 2 p.m. in Health & Sports Center. Forwards Glaucia Lehn and Yvonne Houston, centers Alex Zamora and Tasheema Lewis, and guards Jen Mitchell, Shanna Suttington and Danielle DeBerry will play their final regular season home game.

The Buccaneers (17-8, 11-4 Sunshine State Conference) will host a first round league tournament game Wednesday night at HSC.

Barry can earn a share of the Sunshine State Conference title with a win over the Lions (7-18, 1-14). The Buccaneers are also playing for consideration in the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in each region qualify for the national tournament. Barry sits in eighth place currently, but beat South Region No. 1 Rollins on Wednesday.

Houston leads the Buccaneers  in scoring at 10.5 points per game, and averages 5.4 rebounds. DeBerry is second at 10.0 and 5.3 rpg. DeBerry is shooting .467 from the field. Zamora leads the team in rebounds (8.0) and total blocks (45).

Mitchell is scoring 5.4 ppg and shooting 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Lewis (1.4) and Lehn (1.5) have helped in the rebounding during their playing time.

The Buccaneers men's game will tip off a half-hour following the women's game around 4 p.m.. Barry (12-15, 6-9) can finish as high as sixth, which will determine its opponent in the league tournament, which begins Wednesday on the road. Saint Leo (15-10, 9-6) beat the Bucs, 61-53, in Saint Leo on Jan. 25.

Senior guard Evan White will play his final game in Miami Shores. He leads the team in scoring (12.9 ppg). White has scored 784 career points in three years at Barry. He has made 142 three-pointers in his career.

The nomination for the honor stated the following: “Katerra is a leader on campus. She did an outstanding job creating awareness with the Travon Martin forum and has done a great job helping freshmen learn about and acclimate to Baker as a Salon leader this fall.
