A political science class from East Central University recently raised $725 and awareness for children’s hunger.

Dr. Christine Pappas’ Political Science 1113 classes did a service learning project where they purchased 200 orange bracelets that say ‘No Child Should Go Hungry’ and sold them on campus and at ECU football games.

On Nov. 20, approximately 40 students participated in a ‘Day Without Food’ and fasted for up to 30 hours to build understanding for hungry children.

The $725 was presented to Brenda Price, a counselor at Homer Elementary School, to buy additional food for the Homer Backpack Program. Children sign up to take home backpacks full of food each Friday so they can have meals to eat over the weekend.

With the money, Price plans to buy beef jerky and fruit for a holiday treat.

First Class of ME Grads

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University will award diplomas to eight students who will have the distinction of being the first EWU graduates to earn degrees in mechanical engineering during the 2012 Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Roos Field.

The mechanical engineering curriculum, first offered in the fall quarter of 2009, builds on concepts studied in physics, math and the sciences. It prepares students to be knowledgeable in their fields and effective problem solvers.

In addition to the mechanical engineering degree, Eastern also offers a degree in electrical engineering, making it unique among the regional universities in the state of Washington.  

"This is really a monumental achievement for the university," said Judd Case, dean of the College of Science, Health and Engineering. "This new degree opportunity represents EWU's commitment to student success, as highly-qualified graduates are prepared to enter a high-demand field."

Case also points out the ME graduates reflect Eastern's commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Such STEM-related fields are considered to be a driving force in economic recovery and global competitiveness, which is why the state has directed higher education institutions to expand enrolments STEM programs

Attend master class with pianist Julian Martin, Feb. 2

LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) ? Julian Martin, distinguished pianist and Julliard School professor, is leading a master class series at EOU as part of a tour of Oregon colleges.

Tailored for piano teachers, this free professional development opportunity is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in Groth Recital Hall in Loso Hall, Room 126.

Students, faculty and community members are also invited to attend. An informal reception hosted by The Oregon Community Foundation will follow the class, providing an opportunity for audience members and EOU student performers to visit with Martin.

Martin has taught at the Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and Julliard since 1999. In addition to giving master classes throughout the U.S., he has presented in Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Uruguay and Venezuela.

A native of Alabama, Martin first garnered global attention as winner of the Montevideo International Competition, and also received major prizes in the Casadeus/Ravel (now Cleveland International), Kapell and Bachauer competitions. In 1982, he was awarded the Collaborative Prize at The Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.

This master class is made possible through The Nellie Tholen Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation. OCF awards more than $65 million annually in grants and scholarships.
