Edinboro University’s first bagpiping major to present senior recital - Free performance to showcase piper’s skill

The unmistakable hum and skirl of bagpipes are integral to the soundtrack of campus life at Edinboro University, where the Scottish heritage of the school's founders remains a vital part of the University identity.

Few Edinboro pipers, however, can match the energy and passion of senior Sean Patrick Regan, who soon will have a claim that no piper anywhere can match: the world's first music education degree with a concentration in piping.

Regan, 24, a Pittsburgher who expects to graduate in May, will present his senior recital, "An Afternoon on the Pipes," on Saturday, December 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the University's Cole Auditorium-Memorial Hall. Admission is free.

The recital will include both modern and classical arrangements from the piping repertoire, including the debut of an arrangement for organ and bagpipe. Regan will perform with recorded accompaniment, most of which he performed himself, including percussion and additional bagpiping.

"At any given time, you'll hear between two and four of me playing," he said.

A piper for 16 years and the son and grandson of pipers – his father and mentor, Patrick Regan, is instructor of bagpiping at Edinboro University – Sean Patrick Regan has been performing professionally for more than a decade. In 2012 alone, he has been Grade 1 Midwest Champion, winner of the "Best of the Boro" talent show and Champion Supreme of the World Online Piping & Drumming Championship.

Sean Patrick Regan is the youngest person, at age 19, to teach as a guest instructor at the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland, and the youngest to found and lead a bagpipe summer camp. The Edinboro Scottish Arts Summer Camp on the University campus will return for a second year in July 2013.

When he isn't performing solo, Sean Patrick Regan teaches privately, both in person and via Skype, and is involved in the EUP Pipe Band, the EUP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Great Lakes Pipe Band.

On track to release a new album in December, he looks ahead to continuing his professional career with an aim of entertaining and teaching people of all ages who have an interest and passion for music and the Great Highland Bagpipe.

Exercise science major added

To better address the needs of students and expand opportunities for them, Goshen College is both adding a new exercise science major and changing the Physical Education Department to the Kinesiology Department.

The exercise science major at Goshen College is for students interested in focusing specifically on the scientific aspects of physical education, such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and exercise testing. Students also learn how to help people live healthier lives through nutrition, exercise and injury rehabilitation. “We are not moving away from physical education teaching, but we are expanding opportunities for students within the department,” said Dr. Jewel Lehman, Goshen College Professor of Kinesiology and chair of the department.

The exercise science major will be a rigorous program requiring anatomy, physiology and chemistry. Students who are successful in the program will be prepared for careers in exercise science and for graduate school. Exercise science majors have the option of getting a concentration in fitness leadership.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that participation in recreational sports is at an all-time high in society as people seek the positive effects sports and exercise can have on their whole health. Because of this trend, there is an increasing need for people with exercise science majors.

In terms of the department name change, “the name kinesiology more accurately describes current programming in our department at Goshen College,” Lehman said. “Kinesiology is a broad term which refers to the scientific study of human movement and it incorporates the varied areas of study within the discipline. Our department is evolving with the discipline and this growth merits the name change. Scholarly study, experience and professional practice are all included as important aspects within the program.”

With these changes, the Kinesiology Department will now offer majors in physical education and exercise science. Minors are available in sport management, physical education, exercise science, health, and sport and recreation. Students have the option of teaching (K-12 grades) with a physical education major or getting a coaching endorsement.
