Edinboro University President Julie E. Wollman reassures students as they prepare to return to school amid negotiations between the State System of Higher Education and the faculty union that the spring semester will begin as scheduled on Monday, January 28, and plans are in place to continue their education if faculty should strike.
In a statement to students, their parents and the broader community, Dr. Wollman states:
As the start of a new semester approaches, we at Edinboro University know our students have a lot to look forward to: reunions with friends and mentors, courses to explore, and opportunities to build on last semester's achievements.
It's understandable at this time that the status of negotiations between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) also is on the minds of our Edinboro University students and your families. First and foremost, you should know that we have a plan in place to ensure that your education continues should a strike occur. Answers to frequently asked questions about this plan, along with the latest information about the status negotiations, are available on the PASSHE Negotiations Update section of University website at www.edinboro.edu.
You should also know that the Edinboro University administration and faculty share a focus on students and a desire for a settlement. PASSHE officials have stressed that they, too, are committed to achieving a new collective bargaining agreement that is fair and positions the State System universities to continue to provide affordable, quality education. Details about the State System’s bargaining positions are available on the PASSHE website at www.passhe.edu.

A Message from President Julie E. Wollman on the Connecticut Tragedy

From: President Julie E. Wollman

I join you in sharing the deep sorrow and pain of our nation and world following the tragic mass shooting on Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The deaths of 20 children and six adults are unimaginably horrific. As a community, we grieve for the families, classmates and students of those who were killed. We also mourn the loss to Newtown, Connecticut, and the larger society of so many bright young lives and dedicated educators. Tremendous potential and talent have been extinguished.

It is especially disturbing that this terrible act took place in an educational setting. A school should be a safe, nurturing environment for curiosity, respect, responsibility, integrity and the other life-affirming values we share. It should never be a place of terror and destruction.

As a university, we are uniquely poised to lead a dialogue on how to address the senseless violence that has shattered the security of our schools and other workplaces with increasing frequency. The expertise of our faculty and staff, the bright minds of our students, and our commitment to the open-minded exchange of ideas equip us to contribute solutions where there is now only despair. We will begin such a dialogue in the spring semester.

For the moment, however, it is time simply to claim the possibility of a brighter day and comfort one another.

My thoughts are with you and all who feel the pain of this tragedy.
