Results of Juried Youth Art Exhibition at ENMU Announced

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University in Portales has announced the juried results of K through ENMU the 4th Annual Juried Youth Art Exhibition, as part of National Youth Art Month in March. 

The Runnels Gallery (located within the ENMU Golden Library) received over 145 submissions to this year’s exhibition. “We are extremely pleased with the turnout to this year’s event,” said Bryan Hahn, Runnels Gallery manager. “The quality of work continues to grow exponentially every year; there is such a bright and promising voice of the artist in each artwork.”

A public reception will be held in honor of all those artists selected for inclusion in the show on Friday, March 1, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Runnels Gallery. Awards will be announced at 5:45 p.m. including Best of Show, 2nd place, 3rd place, and honorable mentions.

The exhibition was free to enter and open to students in kindergarten through their senior year of college that were within 100 miles of Eastern New Mexico University. Students in public school, private school or homeschooled were eligible. The Portales Lions Club sponsored the event by donating $800 in cash prizes. The Portales Arts Council (PAC) sponsored the event through administrative support.

“This is a great event for young aspiring artists to get involved with,” explains Hahn. “Artists are given the opportunity to experience what a juried show is like, how it feels to have their work displayed in a professional gallery, and the experience of selling their work if they so choose. The exhibition also gives an opportunity for the community to see what our young artists are producing; there are some great things happening artistically among our youth.”

Faculty Exhibition opens in Nightingale Gallery Jan. 11

LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) – The Nightingale Gallery at EOU begins a new year and academic term with an exhibition by six accomplished visual arts faculty.

The biennial Faculty Exhibition opens with a reception Friday, Jan. 11 from 6-8 p.m. in the gallery located in Loso Hall. The show will run through Feb. 1 and gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nationally and internationally recognized artists with works on display are Doug Kaigler, professor of sculpture, Cory Peeke, associate professor and director of the Nightingale Gallery, Jessica Plattner, associate professor of painting, Susan Murrell, assistant professor of printmaking, Michael Sell, assistant professor of photography, and Jess Riva Cooper, visiting assistant professor of ceramics.

“Just as we six artists have come together to create a vibrant art program at EOU, we have worked together to create a dynamic exhibition which explores the individual talents of each, as well as the collaborative nature inherent in our close knit program,” said Peeke, speaking as gallery director.

The exhibition offers a collective view of the art faculties’ recent creative endeavors. Integration of each artist’s body of work into the communal space of Nightingale Gallery allows viewers to explore visual relationships among them, as well as consider the newest trends in the work of some of this area’s most dynamic and respected artists.

Kaigler will present some of his recent sculptural works, which both feature and explore the elemental materials of wood, stone and water.

Peeke and Plattner will each present their most recent collage pieces.  Peeke’s work feature found vintage photography, which through the process of collage, combines with other elements to become something both fresh and familiar.

Plattner’s collages depict her infant daughter in a variety of surreal settings and act as a meditation on the magical possibilities of childhood.

Murrell will exhibit a selection of prints made during her summer residency at the Crow Shadow Institute.

The photographic portraits that Sell has on view are part of his larger investigation into fictional and real selves, and how the Internet enables users to fictionalize themselves in a public manner.

Cooper, who is filling in for Peter Johnson while he is on sabbatical, will present a selection of her newest ceramic sculpture inspired by the literature of Yiddish folklore, science fiction and magical realism.

Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition Finale To Panthers

MIAMI – The Barry Buccaneers hung tough with the FIU Panthers for 22 minutes, before the Panthers pulled away late for a 68-38 exhibition win in women's basketball action at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Panthers led 30-25 at the half after the Bucs shot a very respectable 9-of-20 from the field in the first half. Barry knotted the game at 30-30 with just 2:07 gone in the second period by going 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

But the Bucs hit just 4-of-18 from the field the rest of the way and made just one more trip to the line as the Panther defense clamped down.

FIU's Jerica Coley led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 10 boards on the night, also chipping in with game-high marks of six assists and four blocks, and adding two steals. Finda Mansare chipped in with 12 points. Tyler Hardy led the Bucs with eight points and five rebounds.

Barry opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at the West Florida Tip-off Classic in Pensacola, Fla., against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes.
