The Education Debate

CHENEY, Wash. - Educational achievement: what does it take? What should education in the United States be? What are the current assumptions held by families, educators, experts and policy makers regarding how to effectively prepare the youth of America in becoming the leaders of tomorrow?

You are invited to Eastern Washington University's JFK Library to view a screening and participate in a panel discussion of the documentary Race to Nowhere, which explores these important educational questions. The event will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 1, inside the JFK Auditorium. Created by first-time filmmaker Vicki Abeles, the film tells the stories of young people pushed to the brink, burned out teachers and deeply frustrated parents.

This event is co-sponsored by EWU Libraries, EWU Department of Education and Eastern Reading Council. Persons with special needs may make arrangements for accommodation by calling 509.359.2264. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free and open to the public.

Oxford-Style Debate Topic: Reparations for Slavery

An Oxford-style debate at Eastern Kentucky University on Tuesday, Feb. 5 will examine the topic of reparations for slavery.

The debate, 7:30-9 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall of the Student Success Building, is part of the University’s year-long observance of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by EKU’s African/African-American Studies Program and Department of Philosophy and Religion.

Participants in the debate, all members of the EKU faculty, will be Dr. Mike Austin, Dr. Gregg Gunderson and Dr. Laura Newhart. The moderator will be Dr. Patrick Nnoromele.
