Contest awards $1,000 scholarship & cash prizes - Edinboro University seeks entries for annual NWPA High School Journalism Competition

Calling all high school journalists! Students can use their skills in print, broadcast and online journalism to win prizes in Edinboro University’s seventh annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition.

The competition is designed to recognize and reward journalistic talent among high school juniors and seniors. It is open to all students in the 11th and 12th grades who have an interest in print, broadcast, online or photojournalism.

“We’ve been sponsoring this competition for many years now, and we’ve always been fortunate to have the support of high school teachers and students around the region,” said Dr. Melissa Gibson, associate professor and competition chairperson. “It’s a way to showcase the talent of high school students who have an interest in communication and media studies.”

Cash prizes, provided by Gazette Newspapers, YourErie.com, WJET-TV, and Fox 66, will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. Winners will receive the following prizes: First-place, $100; Second place, $50; Third place, $25; Fourth place, certificate; and Fifth place, certificate. One “Best in Show” winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to Edinboro University.

“Our department is delighted to again recognize outstanding high school journalism. I believe this event is an important indicator of the overall quality of Edinboro University's journalism program and underscores our ongoing efforts in community outreach and student recruitment," said Dr. Tony Peyronel, chair of the Department of Communication & Media Studies.

Each award winner and a guest (guidance counselor, teacher, or parent) will be invited to an awards luncheon on April 12, 2013, that will be held as part of Edinboro University’s annual High School Journalism Day.

All entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of faculty members from the Edinboro University Communication & Media Studies Department and student staff members from campus media organizations.

High school students can compete in four print journalism categories: news, feature, sports, and opinion; two photo journalism categories: news photo and feature photo; two broadcast journalism categories: broadcast news package and newscast anchor; and one Web publication category.

Students may submit one entry per category. The number of entries per high school is not limited. Two copies of each entry must be received by March 12, 2013.

MARQUARDT WINNER OF ECU CONCERTO COMPETITION; TO HAVE PIANO SOLO PERFORMANCE WITH WIND ENSEMBLE

Claire Marquardt is the winner of the Second Annual East Central University Concerto Competition, it was announced recently by the ECU Music Department.

Marquardt, a junior from Poteau, will have the honor of performing a piano solo with the ECU Wind Ensemble’s Spring Concert on Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

She will perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, one of the most popular pieces ever arranged for piano and wind ensemble.

During her time at ECU, Marquardt has won honorable mention at the Oklahoma Music Teachers’ Association Collegiate Contest and has performed at their annual convention. She also won the collegiate division of the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest in 2011.

Marquardt will graduate from ECU in 2014 and plans to attend graduate school for piano performance.

She was introduced to piano at age 4 by her mother and continued studying with her grandmother as part of her homeschooling. At age 12, she became a student of Mrs. Noma Curtis. She competed at Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs festivals and, at age 13, won the piano duet division at the state level, followed by three state solo wins.

For several summers, Marquardt attended Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony, where she met ECU professor Dr. Starla Hibler. Her time at the arts colony was instrumental in her decision to pursue music as a career.

Marquardt won the IPFAC Junior and Senior Solo Competitions, as well as the Concerto Competition and multiple state and regional awards. In addition, Marquardt received honorable mention, at the high school level, in the national Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest.

“I am very happy that this year’s competition found another talented young musician to showcase at the upcoming concert,” said Juliana Overmier, ECU flute instructor and competition coordinator. “I am equally happy that the competition itself has been so well received, and will continue as an annual event generously funded by the Masonic Endowment for Cultural Enrichment. Their support, added to the combined efforts of the ECU music faculty, will ensure that the Concerto Competition will be successful in supporting and encouraging emerging musicians for many years to come. It has been a pleasure to be associated with this event.”

International Guitar Competition Winner Dylla to Perform at EKU March 26

Marcin Dylla, international guitar competition winner, will perform at Eastern Kentucky University, his last stop before his Carnegie Hall debut.

The concert, sponsored by Eastern Kentucky University Department of Music, Division of Guitar Studies, Guitar Society and the D’Addario Strings, will be held in EKU’s Gifford Theater on Tuesday, March 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $20 general admission, $15 for senior citizens and $10 for students with a valid ID.

Richard Storm, writing for the Sarasota Herald Tribune (Fla.) said: “‘Incredible’ is a word used far too frequently these days, but Polish guitarist Marcin Dylla restored the meaning of the word in an absolutely stunning concert. Large-scale, challenging compositions for solo guitar are not heard often, certainly not performed at this level of seemingly effortless technique and intense artistry. It was clear from the outset that we were hearing a major talent performing music of serious proportions with both impressive technique and deeply musical interpretive skill.”

Collins Advances To Top-9 In Woman of the Year Competition

Grace Collins advanced to the top-9 in the NCAA Woman of the Year contest.

INDIANAPOLIS—Barry’s Grace Collins advanced to the top-three in Division II for NCAA Woman of the Year on Thursday.

The softball star joins runner Kate Griewisch of Lenoir-Rhyne and tennis player Verena Preikschas of California State Stanislaus as the honorees from Division II.

During her time at Barry, Collins made an impact on her school and the community around her. Collins served as vice president for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and traveled to Nashville to assist with relief of the 2010 flood. She was a committee chair for Make-A-Wish Walk for Wishes, America’s Moms For Soldiers and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A four-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete, she was named to the academic all-district team in 2011. She was the first student-athlete to win the Barry University President’s Award, which is presented to the most outstanding senior. In 2012, Collins received the university’s Excellence in Leadership Award.

Collins was named NFCA first-team All-South Region and was a first-team All-American in 2011. She also earned first-team all-region and third-team All-America honors through Daktronics as both a junior and a senior. She also received Sunshine State Conference first-team accolades in 2011 and 2012.

“Collegiate athletics has taught me the importance of determination, hard work and undying passion,” Collins said in her personal statement. “In life, everyone feels adrenaline and stress, makes mistakes and some successful strides. But it is those who learn to excel through adversity, manage stress, turn mistakes into learned lessons and handle achievements with humility who will ultimately succeed in the future. Collegiate athletics has empowered me with this competitive edge to not only handle any situation but to conquer it successfully.”

The three Division II finalists are joined by the Division I group (Hillary Bach, Arizona State, softball; Brooke Pancake, Alabama, golf and Alexi Pappas, Dartmouth, cross country/track) and the Division III group (Kelsey Kittleson, Luther, softball; Sarah Jane Otey, Coast Guard, rowing/swimming and Elizabeth Phillips, Washington-St. Louis, cross country/track) to form the top-9 finalists.

The nine finalists, along with the other honorees who made the Top 30, will be invited to Indianapolis for the Woman of the Year festivities. The award weekend (Oct. 12-14) will include a community service project that gives honorees the opportunity to interact with young girls in the city of Indianapolis and serve as role models for them. The NCAA will also host a reception in their honor.

The NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award, now in its 22nd year, honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. Every NCAA member institution is encouraged to honor its top graduating female student-athlete by submitting her name for consideration. Each conference assesses the eligibility of its members’ nominees and selects at least one student-athlete to represent the conference.

To be eligible for the award, a female student-athlete must have completed eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2012 spring season, graduated no later than the end of the summer 2012 term and achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics selects the national winner from the nine finalists.
