Contest awards $1,000 scholarship & cash prizes - Edinboro University seeks entries for annual NWPA High School Journalism Competition

Calling all high school journalists! Students can use their skills in print, broadcast and online journalism to win prizes in Edinboro University’s seventh annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition.

The competition is designed to recognize and reward journalistic talent among high school juniors and seniors. It is open to all students in the 11th and 12th grades who have an interest in print, broadcast, online or photojournalism.

“We’ve been sponsoring this competition for many years now, and we’ve always been fortunate to have the support of high school teachers and students around the region,” said Dr. Melissa Gibson, associate professor and competition chairperson. “It’s a way to showcase the talent of high school students who have an interest in communication and media studies.”

Cash prizes, provided by Gazette Newspapers, YourErie.com, WJET-TV, and Fox 66, will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. Winners will receive the following prizes: First-place, $100; Second place, $50; Third place, $25; Fourth place, certificate; and Fifth place, certificate. One “Best in Show” winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to Edinboro University.

“Our department is delighted to again recognize outstanding high school journalism. I believe this event is an important indicator of the overall quality of Edinboro University's journalism program and underscores our ongoing efforts in community outreach and student recruitment," said Dr. Tony Peyronel, chair of the Department of Communication & Media Studies.

Each award winner and a guest (guidance counselor, teacher, or parent) will be invited to an awards luncheon on April 12, 2013, that will be held as part of Edinboro University’s annual High School Journalism Day.

All entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of faculty members from the Edinboro University Communication & Media Studies Department and student staff members from campus media organizations.

High school students can compete in four print journalism categories: news, feature, sports, and opinion; two photo journalism categories: news photo and feature photo; two broadcast journalism categories: broadcast news package and newscast anchor; and one Web publication category.

Students may submit one entry per category. The number of entries per high school is not limited. Two copies of each entry must be received by March 12, 2013.

"Try Teaching" Program Seeks Mid- and Second-Career Professionals

Eastern Kentucky University’s “Try Teaching” program, now in its eighth year, is again accepting applications from mid- and second-career professionals who are intrigued about their potential in front of a classroom.

The nationally innovative program is geared to those who have doubts about leaving their current job behind to return to college for a second degree. It allows participants to gauge their comfort level as a classroom teacher before making a life-changing career move.

The program, funded by a $175,000 grant from Ashland Inc., has attracted 51 participants in its first seven years. Each spent one or two weeks in a K-12 classroom, gaining first-hand experience as they assisted in the preparation and execution of lesson plans while learning successful educational practices from their teaching mentors.

Several from previous years have decided to enter EKU’s Master’s in Teaching Program, which prepares and certifies individuals who hold non-teaching baccalaureate degrees, according to Dr. Cynthia Resor, coordinator of the MAT program and director of the “Try Teaching” program.

David Webster, who participated in the program in 2012, said he had aspired to become a teacher for many years.

“After a long successful business career, the time came for me to decide whether to jump out of the plane and start a completely new career,” Webster said. “Converting a dream to reality sounds good but leaving a secure job and taking on the commitment to retool for the teaching profession created some anxious moments. The Try Teaching program was the perfect opportunity for a reality check.  It allowed me to experience a day in the life of a school teacher and have some interaction with students in a classroom setting. Try Teaching gave me the first-hand experience and insight to make an informed decision to take the jump. The rip cord worked and the parachute did open. I look forward landing in the profession of teaching.”

Another 2012 participant, Laurel Ward, said Try Teaching is “an amazing program for professionals who are thinking of making a career change. I had been in the business world for almost ten years, ever since I graduated college. I started feeling that I needed a change in my life but wasn't sure if teaching was really the answer. I hadn't been in the public school system since I was a student. Try Teaching allowed me to observe and discuss the teaching profession with some wonderful teachers in my area. They not only welcomed me into their classrooms to observe but to participate as well.  After my Try Teaching experience I had confidence that education was the career change I was looking for. I don't think I would've have been able to make that decision without the Try Teaching experience.”

Participants have the option of one- or two-week placements in middle and high schools throughout central and southeastern Kentucky, as close to home as possible.

In addition to classroom time with their mentoring teacher, “Try Teaching” participants will spend time with a university-level educator to learn more about certification procedures, the teaching profession and career benefits.

EKU officials hope the program will help those interested in making a career change to teaching.

“We need to be looking at alternate avenues for drawing qualified men and women from various backgrounds into the teaching field,” Resor said.

EKU College of Education faculty and school district administrators work together to identify outstanding K-12 educators who will host participants in their classrooms. The host teachers will then be trained in effective mentoring techniques.

A preliminary screening will pre-qualify participants and reduce the risk that a participant would be ineligible for the MAT program. Those interested in the “Try Teaching” program will be asked to assemble educational transcripts, a professional resume and letters of recommendation, and will be interviewed to assess their overall disposition to teach. Also, before introducing anyone into a classroom setting, EKU will complete stringent state and federal background checks on all program candidates.

Edinboro University seeks nominations for 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards - Recipients honored during annual MLK Luncheon

Know of someone whose contributions to society reflect the spirit, philosophy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? If so, you might want to nominate such a man or woman to become a recipient of Edinboro University’s 17th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards.

Edinboro University is now accepting nominations for the MLK awards, which will be presented during the University’s annual awards luncheon on Friday, February 8, 2013. Several dozen prominent citizens from northwestern Pennsylvania have been honored by the University since the awards luncheon began in 1997.

Nominations must contain a narrative description of the candidate’s achievements and contributions to society with specific examples listed. Achievements and contributions also must be reflective of Dr. King’s philosophy and teachings, in particular in the area of social justice, social activism or peace initiatives.

Nominations should also include the candidate’s career profile or resumé, and all contact information for both the nominee and the nominator.

All nominations should be submitted to Edinboro University Vice President for Student Affairs Kahan Sablo, c/o Ms. Cyndi Waldinger, 218 Frank G. Pogue Student Center, 405 Scotland Road, Edinboro, PA 16444. Completed nominations can be e-mailed to cwaldinger@edinboro.edu.

Willimantic, CT -- Faculty and student researchers at Eastern Connecticut State University are seeking nominations for the 2013 TIMPANI Toy Study.  This annual study, conducted through Eastern's Center for Early Childhood Education, examines how young children in natural settings play with a variety of toys. 

Faculty and student researchers observe how children play with the nominated toys and rate children's interactions on three subscales: thinking and learning, cooperation and social interaction, and self-expression and imagination. The study provides valuable information to parents and teachers about the types of toys that help children learn, and helps researchers understand how children's play with toys contributes to their overall development.
 
The highest-scoring toys in previous studies have included DUPLO bricks, a toy made by the LEGO Group; Hasbro's Tinker Toys; and Wooden Vehicles and Signs, made by Melissa and Doug, LLC.

Eastern is now seeking nominations of toys to be included in the 2013 study.  Toys may be nominated by parents, grandparents, teachers and others not affiliated with the toy industry.  To nominate a toy, visit www.easternct.edu/cece/timpani.html, or contact the Center for Early Childhood Education at (860) 465-0687.  Nominations must be received by Feb. 1.
