Spokane, Wash. - The 2012 Get Lit! Festival is around the corner, running April 9-15, and during the event several writing workshops will be offered in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, performance, screenwriting and education.
The Get Lit! Festival workshops will take place Saturday, April 14, at the Riverpoint Campus in the Phase I Building. The events will be split up into two time blocks; the morning session (9:30-11:30 a.m.), and the afternoon session (3:30-5:30 p.m.). The only workshop NOT at the Riverpoint Campus will be the Kids Writing Workshop, which will be held at Auntie's Bookstore (see below for details).
Several different areas will be covered through the workshops, including poetry, education, storytelling, as well as elements of fiction and non-fiction. One workshop in particular, Screenwriting 101, will be led by award-winning screenwriter Gill Dennis, who is famous for his screenplay, Walk the Line, about singer Johnny Cash. Another workshop will be Travel Writing with Julian Smith. In this class he will instruct on how to shape the ideas, images and experiences of traveling into a polished work. Whether it's poetry or a magazine article, Smith will help with the evolution of your travel-related work.
There will also be workshops for kids and teens. The free Kids Writing Workshop will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 14, at Auntie's Bookstore. It will be led by children's and youth author Claire Rudolf Murphy. The workshop is open to ages 8 and up, and adults are welcome to participate in the workshop with their children.
The free teen-writing workshop will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m., Saturday, April 14, at the Riverpoint Campus. It will be led by the editors of Willow Springs, EWU's nationally recognized literary journal. The workshop is free, but pre-registration is required. Email willowspringsewu@gmail.com to register.
For educators, two workshops will be clock-hour eligible. The first is the Bringing Literature to Life workshop, which will provide concrete strategies for engaging students and helping them to see how the books they're reading in the classroom are interesting and relevant to their lives. This workshop is ideal for current teachers and student teachers, as well as theater students and professors, who can learn strategies for drawing out the core emotions of a given work.
The second educators' workshop will address how to incorporate poetry into the classroom, and will provide teachers with easy methods that are fun for students. Clock-hour registration will be available on-site for both educators' workshops.
Registration for the Get Lit! Festival workshops is open now through the Corbin Arts Center. The cost for students is $20 (with valid student ID) and $30 for non students. Registration is encouraged since a limited number of spots are available in each workshop. The festival will accept day-of registrations as space allows.
