East Central University is pleased to announce that its newest facility on campus will be named the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

Chickasaw Nation Gov. Anoatubby said that having the Chickasaw name on the business center is a tribute to centuries of Chickasaw history.

“Chickasaw people have been entrepreneurs for centuries,” said Gov. Anoatubby. “East Central University has a great record of preparing students for success in the world of business and we are delighted to be a part of this worthwhile endeavor. We have a long record of working successfully with ECU on projects such as the Native American Studies Center, the Dynamic Women’s Conference, Chickasaw Summer Arts Academy and National Night Out, so we are confident this will be a success as well.”

The $10.65 million and 62,000-square-foot building, located on the west side of campus at Main and Center Streets in Ada, is set to open this fall and will house the new Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business.

The facility sits directly west of another of ECU’s newer buildings, the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center, which opened in 2009.

“We’re honored and pleased to be in yet another valued partnership venture with the Chickasaw Nation and Governor Bill Anoatubby. The Chickasaw Nation, like ECU, places a high value on education and this enables our students to get the most out of their learning experience,” said ECU President John Hargrave. “This state-of-the-art facility will only enhance the educational opportunities of students who will be future business leaders or simply those involved in the business world.”

The Chickasaw Business and Conference Center’s first floor will house the ECU Police Department, a synergistic learning center and a food court.

The Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business will be on the second floor where each classroom will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, a specialized financial lab/classroom, several student-friendly study areas and lounges.

The third floor is reserved for offices for the dean of the business school and faculty members, conference rooms, technology lab/classrooms, several faculty lounges and a balcony/reception area.

The center’s unique design allows the conference center to double as a Federal Emergency Management Agency safe room, in case of a disaster like Hurricane Katrina, by providing short-term shelter. The safe room functionality is possible because of a $1.46 million grant awarded to ECU by FEMA.

Miles Associates of Oklahoma City is the architect for this project.

East Central University’s Oklahoma Business Week was recently presented the Exceptional Program Award for Best Conference in the Great Plains Region of the Association for Continuing Higher Education.

Accepting the award on behalf of ECU, were Stacey Bolin, Oklahoma Business Week director and ECU instructor of computer science and business administration, and Charlee Lanis, coordinator of ECU’s Community Education Program. The award was presented at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.

Oklahoma Business Week is a camp which introduces high school students to the business world. Students, attending OBW, are divided into teams. Each team has a volunteer mentor from the Oklahoma business community who worked with the students in developing a ‘company’ to learn about business practices and compete in a simulated business challenge.

The 2013 OBW camp will be held June 2-7. It is open to all high school students who will complete the ninth through 12th grades in the spring of 2013.

Among the list of speakers for the event will are: Rhett Laubach, founder of Your Next Speaker and Leadership Expert; State Senator Susan Paddack; Kenneth Knoll, Concept Investments manager at i2e; Monica Neal, senior vice-president of People’s Electric Cooperative; Kyle Essmiller, human resources director for PostRock Energy; Jim Hamby, president of Vision Bank; Mark Keiffer, retired executive from AT&T; Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby; and ECU President John Hargrave.

EKU to Host Conference of Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education

Eastern Kentucky University will host the 30th Anniversary Conference of the Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education April 14-16. More than 200 black students, faculty, administrators and Kentucky state officials are expected to participate.

Centering on this year’s theme, “Generational Leadership: Embracing the Talents of Blacks in Higher Education,” the KABHE Conference Planning Committee has developed a series of programs and activities “designed to focus on the development of leadership at every level and preparing for transitioning from old school to new school as we celebrate our past and embrace the future of blacks in higher education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the nation, and abroad,” said Sandra Moore, associate provost for diversity planning at EKU. “Another first during this conference is the Student Leadership Institute, which is designed for our high school students so that we can strengthen the pipeline for black leadership in Kentucky.”

EWU Career Conference

CHENEY, Wash. - With graduation now on the horizon, Eastern Washington University students can get a head start on the job search at Eastern's 4th annual Work It Career Conference, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 10, in the Walter and Myrtle Powers Reading Room in Hargreaves Hall.

Work It will feature six career building sessions hosted by a panel of community professionals, and the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington will be the keynote speaker during the noon hour. The day will end with a career fair featuring more than a dozen potential employers.

"During this tough economy, internships are considered to be one of the best ways for students to find work," said Romeal Watson, internship coordinator for EWU Career Services. "The Work It event is designed to connect students to many of the local professionals in order to provide networking opportunities, and increase their likelihood of finding an internship or potential employment."

U.S. Attorney Michael Ormsby, who previously served on the EWU Board of Trustees, will address more than 250 students during the lunch hour. Ormsby has served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District since Oct. 2010. Throughout his career, Ormsby has advised public entities and governmental institutions on municipal finance and other legal matters.

According to EWU Career Services, just 19 percent of college students had jobs lined up by the time they graduated last year. Out of that number, 90 percent found their jobs because they had completed an internship.

EKU Big Winner at KMEA Conference

Eastern Kentucky University was a big winner at the recent Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Conference.

The University’s Foster Music Camps, the second longest-running such event in the nation, received the President’s Award. Earlier, the Foster Camps had received the District 11“Friend of Music” award, given in recognition of individuals, organizations or corporations whose activities have demonstrated outstanding support for music education. “The evidence submitted for Foster Camps was so compelling that the KMEA Awards Committee felt that recognition by way of the President’s Award was in order,” said KMEA Executive Director John Stroube,

The Foster Camps will mark their 78th anniversary this summer.

Also, Ben Walker, who for the past several years has served as director for the Foster Music Camps and is the band director at B. Michael Caudill Middle School in Richmond, received a (District 11) Citation for Service in recognition of “several years of skillfully managing the work crew at the annual KMEA conference.

“This job requires leadership, effective communication, organization, a mature perspective on the mission of the conference, patience and physical endurance,” Stroube said. “Ben had demonstrated these characteristics consistently, and he has applied these same skills for the past several years as the director of the Foster Music Camps, deepening and broadening his service to the profession.”

Also receiving a Citation for Service (District 8) was Terry Thompson, an EKU graduate who has taught in Carroll County, Greenup County and Ashland over the course of his career.

EKU to Host International Conference Devoted to "Living with Animals"

Eastern Kentucky University, home of the world’s only undergraduate degree in animal studies, will host an international conference March 21-23 devoted to “Living with Animals.”

The event is expected to attract more than 100 participants from throughout the U.S., and from Europe and Iran. Most of those planning to attend are university-based scholars; others work directly with animals or as independent artists. The sessions are open to the public.

The conference consists of two sub-themes: “Living with Horses” and “Teaching with Animals.”

Dr. Robert Mitchell, coordinator of EKU’s Animal Studies Program and co-organizer of the conference, said he hopes the conference “gets people talking about interdisciplinary ideas, helps teachers learn new ways to teach about animals, makes connections between people and animals, and makes animals’ lives better.”

Four widely recognized experts in the field will serve as keynote speakers:

·         Dr. Margo DeMello, who teaches at Central New Mexico Community College, is an author, president and executive director of House Rabbit Society, an international rabbit advocacy organization, and program director for Human-Animal Studies at Animal & Society Institute. Her books include “Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature” and “Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection.”

·         Dr. Francine Dolins, who teaches courses in experimental psychology and animal behavior at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, studies behavioral ecology and cognitive processes in non-human primates under free-ranging conditions in the field and experimentally in the laboratory. She has conducted research in Madagascar, Costa Rica and Peru.

·         Dr. Kenneth Shapiro is executive director and president of the Animals and Society Institute and author of three books, most recently “Animal Models of Human Psychology: Critique of Science, Ethics and Policy.” He is founder and editor of Society & Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies, co-founder and co-editor of Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, and editor of the Human-Animal Studies Book Series.  

·         Dr. Kari Weil, professor of letters at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, has published widely on literary representations of gender, French feminism and, more recently, on theories and representations of animal otherness. She is the author of “Thinking Animals: Why Animal Studies Now.” Her current project is tentatively titled “The Most Beautiful Conquest of Man: Horses and Animal Conquests in Nineteenth-Century France.”

“The first day (Thursday) has one track of talks that is all about horses, and there are talks about horses spread throughout,” Mitchell said. “Also on Thursday are presentations about dogs and animal studies more generally. On Friday talks concern teaching about animals, contradictions in our ways of thinking about animals, conflicts between animals and people, animal subjectivity and experience, memorialization of animals, and ethics toward animals.”

Activities will take place in the Combs Building, John Grant Crabbe Main Library and O’Donnell Hall of the Student Success Building.

The event’s other co-organizer is Julia Schlosser, an artist and art historian who works and teaches at universities in the Los Angeles area, and teaches EKU’s online Animals and Art course for the Animal Studies major.

EKU’s baccalaureate degree program in Animal Studies, a cross-disciplinary program housed in the Department of Psychology, concentrates on non-human animals, their interactions and relationships with people, and the mutual influences that humans and non-human animals exert on each other’s existence, evolution and history. It incorporates applied fields, science and the arts and humanities, providing students with a means to become knowledgeable about animals and their relationships with humans from diverse perspectives, and simultaneously experience and learn from a strong, traditional liberal arts education.

Approximately 80 students are currently enrolled in the program, which first offered classes in 2010. The first four graduates of the program crossed the commencement stage in December 2012.

Prestigious Conference Coming 2015

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University has been selected to host the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), a prestigious academic event that will bring up to 3,000 students and faculty to the Cheney-Spokane area for the three-day conference, April 16-18, 2015.

Eastern's bid was evaluated by the Council on Undergraduate Research's NCUR oversight committee. Members of the committee visited campus in early September as part of an extensive review process for this respected conference. The university was one of two finalists, and worked with Visit Spokane to bring the research event to the region.

"Eastern is thrilled to be able to host this outstanding research event," said EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo. "The selection of Eastern as the host of this national conference is indicative of the tremendous progress the university has made in promoting research and the development of high quality programs. This conference will also give our students a chance to shine on a national stage against their peers."

"The opportunity to host this respected national event is evidence of the long-standing tradition at EWU to involve our students in research and scholarly pursuits," added Rex Fuller, EWU provost and VP for Academic Affairs. Many (114) Eastern students have attended NCUR over the years after honing their skills at the university's annual Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, held each spring on the Cheney campus. The Symposium is the largest, campuswide academic event at EWU, and allows undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research after months of preparation with their faculty mentors.

Like the EWU Symposium, NCUR gives participants the valuable opportunity to present their scholarly abstracts and creative works - via oral/poster presentation, interactive exhibit or artistic display - in a formal, professional setting. It also gives students an excellent chance to interact, and it prepares them for graduate school and fine tunes their workforce skills.

Many (114) Eastern students have attended NCUR over the years after honing their skills at the university's annual Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, held each spring on the Cheney campus. The Symposium is the largest, campuswide academic event at EWU, and allows undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research after months of preparation with their faculty mentors.

Like the EWU Symposium, NCUR gives participants the valuable opportunity to present their scholarly abstracts and creative works - via oral/poster presentation, interactive exhibit or artistic display - in a formal, professional setting. It also gives students an excellent chance to interact, and it prepares them for graduate school and fine tunes their workforce skills.

Fifteen students and staff from Eastern recently attended this year's National Association for Campus Activities conference at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Eastern's student Campus Activity Board (CAB) coordinators took home honors for several categories including Excellence in Programming, Best Poster, Best Themed Campaign and Best Traditional Promotion for their division.

Participating students included Amy Dillon, Samantha Codding, Sydney Hanlon, Dane Paracuelles, Giancarlos Perez, Keith Sunthorn, Thomas Balestracci, Solinda Keth, Jessica Johnson, Melissa Groccia, Emilee Blais, Samantha Stevens, Lauren Hopper, Kimberly Perna and Alexa Senia.

The National Association for Campus Activities advances campus activities in higher education through a business and learning partnership, creating educational and business opportunities for its school and professional members. NACA has more than 950 college and university members and over 550 associate members who represent artists, lecturers and performers.
