Goshen College to host community fair to showcase new spaces and award-winning radio station

Goshen residents will have an opportunity to explore renovated spaces at Goshen College, experience a live broadcast of 91.1 The Globe and win prizes, including an iPad mini, during a community fair and open house on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Visitors can explore the newly renovated Union Building space, which includes a new Welcome Center, the recently established Center for Intercultural and International Education, and 91.1 The Globe’s revamped radio station. The family friendly event will also feature student musicians and performers, face painting, student and faculty artwork and complimentary food.

Guests will also have the chance to register for a number of giveaways in addition to an iPad mini, such as Performing Arts Series tickets, a college cabin rental, passes to the college’s Recreation-Fitness Center, a Music Together class for children, student artwork and tickets for upcoming student musical and theater performances.

Goshen College’s student-run, award-winning radio station, 91.1 The Globe, will broadcast live from the lobby of the Union building, and guests will have the opportunity to meet the DJs and experience the radio station in operation. The Globe was just awarded “Best College Radio Station in the Nation” for the second time in three years by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System, and was named “Radio School of the Year” in Indiana for the last two years by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters.

In 2012, the Union Building underwent a renovation that transformed the west half of the old gym into new office spaces, a conference room, reception area and renovated bathrooms. The project was funded by the Lilly Endowment, which in 2006 granted $12.5 million to Goshen College to establish the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning (CITL), now known as the Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE). CIIE encompasses what was once the Multicultural Affairs Office, CITL, and the International Education and Study-Service Term (SST) programs.

“Although the emphasis is on the remodeled spaces in the Union Building, we really hope this event will attract folks who are not familiar with Goshen College or just curious to know more about this community asset,” said Jim Caskey, vice president for institutional advancement at Goshen College.

Edinboro University’s first bagpiping major to present senior recital - Free performance to showcase piper’s skill

The unmistakable hum and skirl of bagpipes are integral to the soundtrack of campus life at Edinboro University, where the Scottish heritage of the school's founders remains a vital part of the University identity.

Few Edinboro pipers, however, can match the energy and passion of senior Sean Patrick Regan, who soon will have a claim that no piper anywhere can match: the world's first music education degree with a concentration in piping.

Regan, 24, a Pittsburgher who expects to graduate in May, will present his senior recital, "An Afternoon on the Pipes," on Saturday, December 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the University's Cole Auditorium-Memorial Hall. Admission is free.

The recital will include both modern and classical arrangements from the piping repertoire, including the debut of an arrangement for organ and bagpipe. Regan will perform with recorded accompaniment, most of which he performed himself, including percussion and additional bagpiping.

"At any given time, you'll hear between two and four of me playing," he said.

A piper for 16 years and the son and grandson of pipers – his father and mentor, Patrick Regan, is instructor of bagpiping at Edinboro University – Sean Patrick Regan has been performing professionally for more than a decade. In 2012 alone, he has been Grade 1 Midwest Champion, winner of the "Best of the Boro" talent show and Champion Supreme of the World Online Piping & Drumming Championship.

Sean Patrick Regan is the youngest person, at age 19, to teach as a guest instructor at the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland, and the youngest to found and lead a bagpipe summer camp. The Edinboro Scottish Arts Summer Camp on the University campus will return for a second year in July 2013.

When he isn't performing solo, Sean Patrick Regan teaches privately, both in person and via Skype, and is involved in the EUP Pipe Band, the EUP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Great Lakes Pipe Band.

On track to release a new album in December, he looks ahead to continuing his professional career with an aim of entertaining and teaching people of all ages who have an interest and passion for music and the Great Highland Bagpipe.

Edinboro University’s Erie campus to showcase programs, facilities - Open House scheduled Dec. 4

Career advancement – plus a program that offers a fresh start in academics – will be highlighted Tuesday, Dec. 4, during an open house at Edinboro University’s Erie campus.

Prospective students can tour and learn about the programs of Edinboro’s Porreco Center, 2951 W. 38th St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Whether they want to start part time or are ready to train full time for a new career, they will find what they’re looking for on the Erie campus of the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education.

Offerings at the Porreco Center include the new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and the College Start Program. AAS, which complements certificate-level technical training with essential college-level math, communication and business instruction, can be completed in its entirety at the Porreco Center in two or three semesters.

The degree is available to individuals who have completed a diploma or certificate program at an approved technical school. Students also can choose to complete the college courses before beginning their technical training.

College Start provides a supportive springboard to a college education for students whose study skills are rusty or need further developing, said Janet L. Bowker, Porreco Center Director and Outreach Coordinator.

Students in this alternative admissions program receive academic mentoring and instruction in study skills to help launch their transition to one of Edinboro’s bachelor’s or associate degree programs.

Special reduced fees are being offered for both the AAS and College Start programs, saving students more than $1,000 while enhancing their earning potential. Financial aid is available.

In addition to these offerings and other educational opportunities, the open house will showcase the campus, which is located on a beautiful former horse farm within easy reach of downtown Erie and nearby communities.
