EWU Trustees Appointed

CHENEY, Wash. - Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has appointed The Honorable Robert H. Whaley to serve on the board of trustees at Eastern Washington University. Gregoire also appointed Paul Tanaka to a second term on the board.

Whaley is a United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Washington who assumed senior status in 2009. He begins his term immediately, and it will continue through Sept. 30, 2017. Whaley is a graduate of Princeton University and Emory University School of Law. Before his appointment to the federal bench, he was a Spokane County Superior Court judge and had his own private practice in Spokane for 20 years.

"I am honored to serve as a trustee for Eastern Washington University," said Judge Whaley. "As a longtime resident of Spokane, I am aware of and appreciate the valuable contributions the university and its students have made in our state and throughout the world. In these times of economic strain on personal, state and federal resources, it is important to preserve the opportunities for students to receive a quality higher education."

Whaley replaces Neil McReynolds, who completed his two terms on the board Sept. 30.

Tanaka is the former county administrator officer for King County and is a graduate of Yale University. His original appointment came in 2002, to fill the remaining term of a former trustee.

During his tenure on the Eastern board, Tanaka has served as chair, and currently presides over the Advancement Committee. "I am very grateful to Gov. Gregoire for my reappointment, and I look forward to continuing to work with the board of trustees on the critical issues facing Eastern Washington University," said Tanaka. "Eastern is blessed with an outstanding president, faculty and staff, all working together to ensure that our students receive the best possible educational experience. I feel fortunate to be part of this team." 

Trustees on the board work with President Rodolfo Arévalo to set the strategic direction of Eastern, serve as advocates for the university and help ensure that EWU is academically and financially accountable and successful.

New Trustees Appointed

 CHENEY, Wash. - Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has appointed two new members to the Eastern Washington University board of trustees and both are EWU graduates - Judge James Murphy of Spokane and Vicki Wilson of Richland, Wash. Their terms are effective immediately and will continue through Sept. 30, 2018.

Judge Murphy earned his BA from Eastern in 1965 before going on to law school. Murphy served on the bench for 26 years in Spokane County, retiring as a superior court judge in 2003. He is currently a partner in Judicial Mediation Group and serves on the International Court of Arbitration for Sport. Murphy is an avid skier, hiker and camper. He is also extensively involved in USA Track and Field, and is a certified official who has officiated the Goodwill Games, the U.S. Olympic Trials and the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, Ga.

"I am honored and humbled to be appointed by Gov. Gregoire to the EWU board of trustees," said Murphy. "As a graduate, I have watched an amazing transformation occur at the university since my days as a student. I know this growth was largely made possible by the leadership of an active board of trustees and dedicated leadership provided by staff and the office of the president. I can't wait to be part of such a creative group of people and such a dynamic process."

Vicki Wilson, a native of Tri-Cities, earned her BA in business administration from Eastern in 1981. She currently is a manager in the service operations organization for Lockheed Martin Information Technology. Wilson serves as a foundation board member of Columbia Basin College (CBC) in Pasco, Wash., and also serves on the advisory council for CBC's Lockheed Martin Information Technology Department and is a Class V Leadership Tri-Cities graduate.

"I am very honored to be appointed to the board of trustees for Eastern Washington University," said Wilson. "EWU's president, faculty, staff and board of trustees have truly made Eastern an outstanding place to receive your college education. EWU was a very important part of my early adult years and has played a significant role in who am I today. I'm excited and look forward in helping to continue the great tradition of EWU."

Wilson and Murphy replace Kris Mikkelsen and Ines Zozaya Geist, whose terms recently expired.

Trustees on the board work with EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo to set the strategic direction of the university and help ensure that EWU is academically and financially accountable and successful.
