Environmental issues are important at East Central University and Dr. Dane W. Scott, in the Department of Chemistry, is at the forefront of making them valid.

Scott and ECU was recently chosen by the Environmental Protection Agency for a 2012-2013 P3 Award, a national student design competition for sustainability, focusing on people, prosperity and the planet. 

This grant is the only one awarded to an individual and institution in the state of Oklahoma.

The EPA grant is called Making a Solid State Organic Photovoltaic Cell More Efficient and Economically Beneficial: The Relationship Between Dielectric Constant, Exciton Diffusion Length and Efficiency.

The study focuses on solar cells that are devices that convert solar energy into electricity but are not used in everyday lives as they have limitations due to cost, availability, stability and lack of efficiency.

Scott’s approach to studying this problem will use charged polymeric membranes to increase the dielectric constant of the solar cell with the goal of improving stability, lowering cost and increasing efficiency of solid state organic cells.

Scott and ECU students have been working on the project. Josh Smith, a senior from Ardmore; Cody Soden, a senior from Owasso; and Laura Blanco-Berdugo, of Colombia; along with Scott will present their work at the National Mall in Washington D.C. on April 19.

East Central University music faculty members Melody Baggech, Doug Laramore, and Rudy Lupinski will present “Sound the Trumpet”, a recital featuring music for soprano and trumpet, on Thursday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center.

The performance will include music of A. Scarlatti, G.F. Handel, Rossini, Purcell and local composers, Victoria Davison and Lupinski, as well as several jazz pieces. The concert will be assisted by Bronson Warren on contrabass and Ben Finley on drums.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Friends of Music Concert Series - Edinboro University to present free Erie Philharmonic concert February 12

Edinboro University’s Friends of Music organization will present the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra on Tuesday, February 12, at historic Louis C. Cole Auditorium—Memorial Hall.

Conducted by Daniel Meyer, the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra’s music director, the 7:30 p.m. concert will include the full orchestra performing three masterful works: Osvaldo Golijov’s “Last Round”; Dr. William P. Alexander’s “Ashes and Equinox”; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 – “Emperor.”

The Piano Concerto will feature talented Edinboro University pianist and Associate Professor of Music Kristine West Denton. In addition to teaching piano, piano lab and accompanying at Edinboro, Dr. Denton was also on the faculty of the prestigious Allegheny Summer Music Festival at Allegheny College. A collaborative pianist, she has performed on live radio broadcasts from Kent and Cleveland, Ohio, and Erie’s WQLN. Dr. Denton has performed throughout the U.S. and in Germany, and was a recipient of a Collaborative Fulbright Grant. In addition, she has administered the long-running concert series by the Edinboro University Chamber Players at Erie County’s Blasco Library, and served on the Allocations Council for Arts Erie.

As in past Friends of Music Concert Series presentations featuring the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, this event is free and open to the entire Edinboro community, as well as the general public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The concert’s benefactor, Dr. Alexander, Edinboro’s former Music Department chair, first established a relationship between the University and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra some four decades ago. Although now retired from teaching, Dr. Alexander continues to compose music, including solo and chamber works for friends, both professional and amateur.

Among compositions written by Dr. Alexander are several additional works for orchestra, which were premiered during the University’s Friends of Music Concert Series by the Erie Philharmonic.
For establishing a permanent endowment for the Edinboro University Friends of Music Concert Series, and for his continued support of the Music Department, Alexander was honored several years ago when the University’s new, state-of-the-art music building was dedicated as the “Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center.”

As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Asheville Symphony, Daniel Meyer is recognized as one of the top young conductors of his generation. Having completed successful tenures with the Pittsburgh Symphony as Resident Conductor and the Pittsburgh Youth symphony as Music Director, Meyer worked closely with Mariss Jansons, Sir Andrew Davis, Manfred Honeck and Charles Dutoit; led the Pittsburgh Symphony on tour; and conducted performances with Pinchas Zukerman, Sarah Chang and Marvin Hamlisch. With a talent for creative programming and a passion for connecting with audiences, Meyer is now in his fifth season with the Erie Philharmonic, helping to reinvigorate the orchestra and enlivening the region’s arts community.

Edinboro University’s Friends of Music organization was established in 2000 by a small group of faculty, alumni and friends of the University’s Music Department.  In just 13 years, the membership has grown into a large and energetic group that actively supports the University’s Music Department.

Eastern Nazarene College’s Chamber Singers and A Cappella Choir will present a Valentine’s Day concert at 7:00pm Friday, February 8 at Central Baptist Church in Quincy Center.

Titled “Celebration of Love,” the concert will feature a wide variety of music – including classical and contemporary arrangements as well as popular show tunes – under the direction of Dr. Timothy Shetler.

ENC’s A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers tour regularly in the New England and Mid-Atlantic states. In addition to performing internationally, the choirs have performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and at Boston’s historic Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory.

A suggested donation of $10 to $15 will be taken at the door. Seniors and students with a valid school ID may make a donation of their choice.

Edinboro University’s first bagpiping major to present senior recital - Free performance to showcase piper’s skill

The unmistakable hum and skirl of bagpipes are integral to the soundtrack of campus life at Edinboro University, where the Scottish heritage of the school's founders remains a vital part of the University identity.

Few Edinboro pipers, however, can match the energy and passion of senior Sean Patrick Regan, who soon will have a claim that no piper anywhere can match: the world's first music education degree with a concentration in piping.

Regan, 24, a Pittsburgher who expects to graduate in May, will present his senior recital, "An Afternoon on the Pipes," on Saturday, December 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the University's Cole Auditorium-Memorial Hall. Admission is free.

The recital will include both modern and classical arrangements from the piping repertoire, including the debut of an arrangement for organ and bagpipe. Regan will perform with recorded accompaniment, most of which he performed himself, including percussion and additional bagpiping.

"At any given time, you'll hear between two and four of me playing," he said.

A piper for 16 years and the son and grandson of pipers – his father and mentor, Patrick Regan, is instructor of bagpiping at Edinboro University – Sean Patrick Regan has been performing professionally for more than a decade. In 2012 alone, he has been Grade 1 Midwest Champion, winner of the "Best of the Boro" talent show and Champion Supreme of the World Online Piping & Drumming Championship.

Sean Patrick Regan is the youngest person, at age 19, to teach as a guest instructor at the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland, and the youngest to found and lead a bagpipe summer camp. The Edinboro Scottish Arts Summer Camp on the University campus will return for a second year in July 2013.

When he isn't performing solo, Sean Patrick Regan teaches privately, both in person and via Skype, and is involved in the EUP Pipe Band, the EUP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Great Lakes Pipe Band.

On track to release a new album in December, he looks ahead to continuing his professional career with an aim of entertaining and teaching people of all ages who have an interest and passion for music and the Great Highland Bagpipe.

The Chamber Singers perform at Central Baptist Church

Eastern Nazarene College’s Chamber Singers and A Cappella Choir will present a Valentine’s Day concert at 7:00pm Friday, February 8 at Central Baptist Church in Quincy Center.

Titled “Celebration of Love,” the concert will feature a wide variety of music – including classical and contemporary arrangements as well as popular show tunes – under the direction of Dr. Timothy Shetler.

ENC’s A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers tour regularly in the New England and Mid-Atlantic states. In addition to performing internationally, the choirs have performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and at Boston’s historic Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory.

Choral Union performs with the Quincy Bay Chamber Orchestra at Wollaston Church of the Nazarene

A popular annual holiday tradition returns, as the Eastern Nazarene College Choral Union presents two free performances of Handel’s Messiah.

Comprised of ENC students and members of the community, the 60-voice Choral Union will present the beloved oratorio Saturday Dec. 1 at 7:00 pm and Sunday Dec. 2 at 3:00 pm at the Wollaston Church of the Nazarene. The choral group, consisting of students and community members, will be conducted by John Schnelle, accompanied by the Quincy Bay Chamber Orchestra. The performance will feature solos by professional singers baritone Ryan Mullaney and tenor Arthur Rishi, alto and ENC alum, Hannah Ford (10), and student sopranos Paige Fehr (14) and Elizabeth Blanchette (15).

For more than 75 years, the Eastern Nazarene College Choral Union has performed two major masterworks of choral literature each concert season. Each fall, the Choral Union presents free performances of Handel’s Messiah as a holiday gift to the city of Quincy. In the spring, the group performs a different piece each year, with previous concerts featuring works by Brahms, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Faure and more.
