Edinboro University’s Erie campus to showcase programs, facilities - Open House scheduled Dec. 4

Career advancement – plus a program that offers a fresh start in academics – will be highlighted Tuesday, Dec. 4, during an open house at Edinboro University’s Erie campus.

Prospective students can tour and learn about the programs of Edinboro’s Porreco Center, 2951 W. 38th St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Whether they want to start part time or are ready to train full time for a new career, they will find what they’re looking for on the Erie campus of the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education.

Offerings at the Porreco Center include the new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and the College Start Program. AAS, which complements certificate-level technical training with essential college-level math, communication and business instruction, can be completed in its entirety at the Porreco Center in two or three semesters.

The degree is available to individuals who have completed a diploma or certificate program at an approved technical school. Students also can choose to complete the college courses before beginning their technical training.

College Start provides a supportive springboard to a college education for students whose study skills are rusty or need further developing, said Janet L. Bowker, Porreco Center Director and Outreach Coordinator.

Students in this alternative admissions program receive academic mentoring and instruction in study skills to help launch their transition to one of Edinboro’s bachelor’s or associate degree programs.

Special reduced fees are being offered for both the AAS and College Start programs, saving students more than $1,000 while enhancing their earning potential. Financial aid is available.

In addition to these offerings and other educational opportunities, the open house will showcase the campus, which is located on a beautiful former horse farm within easy reach of downtown Erie and nearby communities.

Students, donors, and local politicians gathered on campus on April 10, 2012 to breakground for a new, five-story building going up at Adventist University of Health Sciences.

The 90-thousand square foot edifice will house existing and anticipated graduate programs in nurse anesthesia, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, and physician’s assistant.

“This is an important step for the College,” says David Greenlaw, university president. “As an institution of excellence couched in Christian thought, we need the space to provide higher levels of education for the future healthcare leaders of Central Florida and beyond.”

The decision to expand came after a careful analysis of healthcare needs in Florida. According to the 2010 Census Interactive Population Search, more than 50 percent of Florida residents are age 50 or older.

The university’s graduate programs and the nine new laboratories that will support them, encourage collaboration and excellence in healthcare education.

But the building will not just benefit the local community. Classrooms equipped with live teleconferencing capabilities will enable instructors to broadcast courses to a variety of locations, including the college’s site in Denver, Colo.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for us to offer mission-based healthcare education outside of Florida,” says Paul Martin, interaction design manager.

The building will also feature a multi-purpose meeting room where the university can host hospital and community education events for up to 600 people.
