Women's Basketball Clamps Down To Beat Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers put the defensive clamps on the Nova Southeastern Sharks, running off a 19-1 run over the last 8:38, to engineer a 47-42 win in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Bucs (12-6, 7-2 SSC) led 28-25 with 14:08 left in the second half after a jumper in the lane by Alexandria Zamora. But Nova (11-7, 4-5 SSC) countered with a 16-0 run over the 6:30, capped by Meixandra Porter’s fast-break bucket that gave the Sharks a 41-28 lead at the 8:38 mark.

From there, it would be all Barry. The Bucs held the Sharks without a basket the rest of the way as Nova went 0-for10 from the field and turned the ball over three times.

Trailing 41-40, Barry’s Jen Mitchell went to the line with 1:04 remaining. She hit the first to tie the game, but missed the second. Yvonne Houston snagged the offensive rebound and drained a basket in the lane to put the Bucs up 43-41. Danielle DeBerry hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 0:21 seconds to preserve the win.

Zamora led the Bucs with 14 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. DeBerry chipped in with 12 points. Jasmine Wilkins led the Sharks with 11 points and Porter added 10.

Women's Basketball Lands A Big Win Against The Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers came out firing on all cylinders, as they opened the preseason with an 83-46 win over Miami-Dade in the Health & Sports Center on Tuesday night in women’s basketball action.

The Bucs (1-0 in the preseason) trailed 6-5 early after a jumper of Adenike Dawdou at 15:54 of the first period.  But Jackie Perez and Colette Eule came off the bench to spark a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to give Barry 14-6 lead.

The Bucs pushed the lead to ten points, 22-12, on a jumper by Dominique Dixon and, after an exchange of baskets, never led by less. Perez hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send Barry into the locker room up 39-21.

After Amanda Frontino hit a jumper on the Bucs’ first possession of the second half, they led 41-21 and the Sharks never got closer. Tyler Hardy’s layup at 10:45 pushed the lead to 30, 61-31, and the Bucs took their biggest lead 81-40 on a fast-break basket by Stephanie Ball with 3:18 left to play.

Perez led five Bucs in double figures with 19 points. Eule followed with 18, Frontino and Hardy each had 11 and Ball added 10. Vernessa Hinnant had 10 to lead the Sharks.

Barry plays their next two preseason games on the road, at Northwood on Oct.28 and at FIU on Nov. 2, before opening the regular season at the West Florida Tip-off Tournament in Pensacola, Fla.
