SPOKANE, Wash. - Eastern Washington University's Get Lit! Programs announces the kids and young adult headliners for the 15th Annual Get Lit! Festival - a weeklong celebration of reading, writing and storytelling for all ages that will run April 8-14. Tickets are now on sale through TicketsWest.
Rebecca Stead is the author of First Light (2007) and When You Reach Me (2009), winner of the John Newberry Medal for children's literature. Her latest work, Liar & Spy (2012), became a New York Times Bestseller and was named a "Best of 2012" children's book by Kirkus Reviews, Publisher's Weekly and others. In this quirky and insightful novel, seventh-grader Georges befriends Safer, a 12-year-old self-appointed spy. Together they track their secretive neighbor Mr. X; but as the mystery unravels, Georges must face difficult truths about loyalty and friendship.
Stead will give a reading, Q&A, and book signing at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, April 14, at the Bing Crosby Theater in downtown Spokane. This event will be free to anyone under 18, as well as anyone over 18 with a valid student ID, and will be included in the Festival Pass. Individual adult tickets can be purchased through TicketsWest for $15.
Patricia McCormick is a two-time National Book Award finalist and the author of five critically acclaimed young adult novels, including Purple Heart and My Brother's Keeper. Her latest novel, Never Fall Down, is based on the true story of Arn Chorn-Pond, a young Cambodian boy who used his musical talent to save himself from the brutal campaigns of the Khmer Rouge. Joining her will be Emily Danforth, author of the widely acclaimed coming-of-age novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
McCormick and Danforth will give a reading at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 13, at the Downtown Spokane Public Library. The event will be free and open to the public.
A Get Lit! Festival Pass gets you in to see the all of the ticketed headlining events: Jonathan Evison and Kim Barnes on Thursday, April 11; Joyce Carol Oates, Jaimy Gordon and David Shields on Friday, April 12; Major Jackson and Robert Wrigley on Saturday, April 13 and Rebecca Stead on Sunday, April 14. The Festival Pass is regularly priced at $45, saving you $20-$25 off individual ticket costs and convenience charges. Student tickets will be available at their college bookstores or at the door of the event.
The festival will feature more than 40 events, including author presentations and readings, writing workshops, panel discussions, poetry slams and more. Most of the events are free to the public.
