CHENEY, Wash. - (UPDATE TO THIS EVENT: Dental Hygiene students treated 64 veterans during this one day clinic. Eastern Washington University's Dental Hygiene program is sponsoring a special dental care day for veterans who are currently enrolled in college and have no other dental coverage. Smiles for Veterans day will be from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at the school's dental hygiene clinic at EWU Spokane on the Riverpoint Campus.
During the event, dental hygiene students will volunteer their talents to help with cleanings, x-rays and dental exams for up to 80 vets. Eight dentists from the community have volunteered to perform exams, and they'll be joined by 12 volunteer hygienists and four assistants from Willamette Dental.
A similar event last year resulted in $24,000 worth of dental hygiene care for veterans.
"The veterans who have participated in this program have been very pleased with the quality of care," said Rebecca Stolberg, director of the EWU Dental Hygiene program. "Additionally, the students, faculty and community volunteers feel like this is a great way to give back and thank our vets for serving our country!"
Smiles for Veterans is part of an annual community service project for EWU students, and there will be a fee of $10 per veteran to help cover the cost of supplies. Appointments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. To make an appointment, call the Dental Hygiene Clinic at 509.828.1309.
