CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University is now one of just seven universities in the U.S. authorized to teach the Microeconomics of Competitiveness course, a distinct business class based on materials developed by the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. It will be offered through Eastern's Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program.
The respected course is designed to have a meaningful impact on the economic competitiveness of the communities in which it is taught. For that reason, the class is targeted not only to graduate students with an interest in business and government, but enrollment will also be open to community and business leaders.
"Being accepted into the Microeconomics of Competitiveness affiliate network is a great accomplishment for Eastern and the MBA program," said Roberta Brooke, director of EWU's MBA Program. "It is not only an excellent education tool, but positions Eastern to be at the forefront of important economic development efforts in the region and state for years to come."
The course is taught at each university by a local instructor, who receives special training and support from Harvard Business School. Professor Harm-Jan Steenhuis, with Eastern's College of Business and Public Administration, was instrumental in the university's acceptance into the network and will teach the microeconomics of competitiveness class.
"This unique business course is a great opportunity for Eastern's MBA students, as it's available at only a handful of U.S. institutions," said Professor Steenhuis. "The materials on strategy and competitiveness will give our students a leg up when entering the workforce. We also hope to develop ideas on how the Spokane economy could improve."
Steenhuis will teach the distinguished class for the first time to Eastern's MBA students during the upcoming spring quarter. After the spring quarter, Eastern will invite Spokane community and business leaders to take the course during summer session.
