CHENEY, Wash. - Sherwin Racehorse, an Eastern Washington University junior in urban and regional planning, has been named a 2012 Udall Scholar in Tribal Public Policy. Sherwin is one of 80 students from 70 colleges and universities selected in this year's competition. The scholarship will provide $5,000 for Sherwin's senior year at Eastern.
Sherwin, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation of Idaho, is the first Eastern nominee and recipient of a Udall Scholarship. He was nominated by Jim Hallett, PhD, an adjunct professor of biology and the EWU faculty representative for the foundation.
Udall Scholars are selected by a 14-member independent review committee on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, health care or tribal public policy; leadership potential; and academic achievement. This highly qualified class of Udall Scholars was selected from 585 candidates nominated by 274 colleges and universities.
The 2012 Udall Scholars will assemble Aug. 8-12, in Tucson, Ariz., to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care and governance. The Udall Foundation is an independent federal agency that was established by Congress in 1992 to provide federally funded scholarships for college students intending to pursue careers related to the environment, as well as to American Indian students pursuing tribal public policy or health care careers.
