CHENEY, Wash. - Construction on Eastern Washington University's new residence hall is well under way, and a Web page dedicated to the project includes a new video as well as drawings and floor plans Visit http://access.ewu.edu/housing/reshallconstruction.xml for all the details.
The $25 million residence hall is being built on the northwest side of campus, on what used to be a parking lot at 10th Avenue and Cedar Street. The building will provide housing for 354 continuing students in double and triple rooms. The facility will also serve as the hub of the residential district, as the first floor will not only provide comfortable social space, but it will be the location of the Housing and Residential Life administrative office.
"As our student enrollment continues to experience record growth, this new residence hall represents our ongoing commitment to improvement of our facilities as we once again lead the state as the best value in higher education in Washington," said EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo.
Amenities of the new hall include a great room with a gas fireplace, full kitchens on every floor, a covered front porch, study areas with natural lighting, game rooms, wireless access throughout and hi-tech laundry machines that communicate with students' cell phones.
The design of the new hall creates more opportunities for students to engage with campus and the residential community, and multiple studies show these types of experiences have a significant impact on their success as students. These same studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to be retained, graduate on time and go to graduate school.
EWU's Board of Trustees approved the sale of bonds to finance the project, which is expected to be completed by fall 2013
