LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) - The EOU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Matt Cooper, professor of music, will perform Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in McKenzie Theatre in Loso Hall.
The 12-piece ensemble recently returned from performing at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, and will share a concert repertoire featuring five horns, rhythm section and vocals with several arrangements done by Cooper.
Works include the Latin jazz standard “Tin Tin Deo,” composed by Walter “Gil” Fuller and associated with the Dizzy Gillespie band, “Bye Bye Blackbird,” a standard written in the 1920s and recorded by everyone from Josephine Baker to Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter’s mysterious “Nefertiti,” recorded in the late 1960s by Miles Davis on the album of the same name, and Herbie Hancock’s funky jazz classic “Cantaloupe Island.”
Also featured will be a quartet led by guitarist Dale Tovar, who performed in the Soloist Division at Lionel Hampton. Tovar will be featured in the ballad “I Remember Clifford,” an elegy for the great jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown composed by Benny Golson, and Tadd Dameron’s boppish “Lady Bird.”
The concert may also include fresh material by the EOU Jazz Guitar Ensemble, led by student director Mike Kellison, and other student instrumental and vocal soloists.
