CHENEY, Wash. - (STORY UPDATED BELOW WITH REPLAY TIMES) Eastern Washington University President Rodolfo Arévalo will participate in a first-of-its-kind state conversation on higher education funding that will include all six presidents from Washington's public universities.
The forum is part of The Greater good Campaign, an effort by the Seattle Times Company and its partners to raise public awareness about the importance of higher education and how it is essential for a robust, job-creating economy. The goal is to protect public higher education funding during the current legislative session.
President Arévalo will be joined by the presidents of Western Washington University, Central Washington University, the University of Washington, Washington State University and The Evergreen State College, from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Seattle's Town Hall community cultural center in downtown. Participants will also include key business leaders from such companies as Microsoft, The Boeing Company and REI.
Organizers say for the past four years, Washington's universities have experienced chronic disinvestment by state government. Reductions proposed in this legislative session would bring the cuts in state spending on higher education to nearly 50 percent since 2008. The state now ranks 48th in per capita enrollment in public baccalaureate programs. Many believe cuts to our universities are permanently undermining the state economy.
"I look forward to joining the other presidents in discussing the risks of continued cuts to higher education," said President Arévalo. "I will share insight on Eastern's unique role in the state's higher education system, and how reductions have impacted the university and its students."
The conversation will be moderated by Seattle Times editorial page Editor Kate Riley and Times business columnist Jon Talton. Admission is $5 and the full ticket price will be donated to the College Success Foundation for scholarships. The event will be streamed live on seattletimes.com and via TVW.
